Whenever we think of a drama or a movie, the first thing that comes in our mind is bromance, many South Korean dramas focus a lot on the partnership of men, but with more substantial and fiercer roles for women coming since the past few years, we can indeed say that feminism is showing its effects. More dramas focus on gender representation and not passive roles. More female-centric action and drama roles are in the picture.

1. The Handmaiden

Handmaiden was released in 2016, the movie is a psychological thriller. The set-up is from historical Japanese occupied Korea. The story is a piece of art, given that it is referenced from a lot of the gothic thrillers of the West. The story has a lot of themes, but it revolves around the love story of two girls, the pickpocket Handmaiden and her Lady.

 

2. More Than Family

The movie revolves around To-il, played by K-Pop sensation Krystal Jung. The story is a light family comedy. She plays a college student who gets pregnant at the age of 21 and her journey of finding out about her biological father and how that brings her closer to her family.

 

3. Mother

Mother is a thriller film, who shares the same filmmaker as Parasite. The feature film is intriguing to the audience given its gripping storyline. It’s the story of a mother seeking the truth behind the murder for which her son gets charged. The mother shows full faith in his disabled son and tries to find the real murderer.

 

4. The Witch: Part 1

A massive success, the horror thriller revolves around a high school student who has amnesia but returns after ten years to unravel her past and the deep dark secrets that were buried with her memory. The story is gripping and has roots in the mystery genre. The movie made a second movie in the franchise after the huge success of the first one.

 

5. The Call

The 2020 horror-thriller starring Park Shin-Hye and Jeon Jong-seo is an adaptation of the British and Puerto Rican movie released in 2017 called The Caller. The actress Jeon Jong-Seo also won a Baeksang Award for the film and had to release on OTT due to the pandemic.

 

6. Sunny

The set-up is of the 80s and a close-knitted friendship of a girl gang. The story is mostly a reminiscence of the past, and how their bonds have changed over some time, from their youth to their old phase; when one of their friends gets terminally ill, the gang gets together.

 

7. The Day I Died: Unclosed Case

The story revolves around three women with nothing common, not the age, timeline, or struggles but how they get together and bond, the film is a plodding placed investigation thriller, and the movie stars the Parasite fame, Lee Jung-Eun as a mute neighbour with similar stories.

 

8. Miss And Mrs Cops

The action-comedy also goes by the name of Girl Cops. The leading roles are of Park Mi Young, played by Ra Mi Ran and Jo Ji Hye, played by Lee Sung Kyung, and how the two of them combined to try to solve a case while handling the struggles of being a woman and a cop and exposing the bias.

 

9. Canola

Starring Kim Go Eun, the story starts on a serious note with the disappearance of a high school student named Hye Ji, played by Kim Gu Eun and her dramatic reunion with her grandmother after ten years of separation. The grandmother was played by Younh Yuh Jung, who plays a diver.

 

10. Harmony

Harmony is a female-centric movie revolving around characters like Kim Moon Ok, played by Na Moon Hee and Hong Jung Hye, played by Kim Yoon Jin. The story is set up in prison with dramatic backstories and the harmony and unity of women and their friendship, and deep meaning.
