Drama Digest

Fa Wang Zhui Ji, which translates to French Open Pursuit, is a mystery courtroom thriller. Our main leads try to solve cases, big or small while dealing with their issues. The drama takes place in Nanshi, a small city up the northern side. Our main leads include a lawyer, a prosecutor, and some side roles like their secretaries and family members.

The Feel-Good Part

The characters of the drama have a lot of depth in them. Even the side characters have a convincing backstory with an engaging storyline that perfectly matches the overall story. It provides layers to the characters and motivates you to learn more about them.

The Disappointing Part

Even though most of the drama takes place in the courtroom, it does not pay much attention to how a case works or a trial takes place. There are a lot of inconsistencies within the plot too. Plus, even though the drama came out in 2020, the quality of the camera work and overall production quality is pretty low.

In-Depth Analysis

The show takes place in the northern city of Nanshi. Our leads, a lawyer and a prosecutor fight against each other in court as defense counsel and a prosecutor. But outside the court are in a loving relationship. The drama, apart from dealing with important cases in the courtroom, also deals with a lot of family drama. It also deals with a lot of severe issues like disputes among family members for property, sexual assault, and breast cancer. All these problems resulted in a lot of tension and raise significant conflicts among our main leads. But the most prominent case in the show is when a wealthy business tycoon commits several severe crimes, including murdering many innocent people. But as usual, the law failed in front of the rich. So, our main leads decided to forget their differences to come together and hatch a plan to make him pay for his crimes. The drama overall has a serious tone to it, but for a thriller drama, the approach of the show is pretty slow.

Star Power

Many people feel Xie Tianhua and Yang Yi are a good pair due to their on-screen chemistry. I’ve never seen them in other dramas, but they did a pretty good job together in this one. So, it might be something to look forward to in the show.

Overall Opinion

The drama might have an exciting plot overall, but plot holes and lousy production quality hinders your will to continue the show for too long. The final episode also seems a bit too illogical and irrelevant to end like that. The drama tries to follow a lot of minor storylines, which ends up with the drama being all over the place. It results in an uninteresting project, even if you wish to watch it for the main plot. As I said, it is pretty slow for something that is supposed to be a thriller; sometimes, it stretches out for no reason.
