Article: Top 10 Facts About Seventeen, The Underrated K-Pop Band

Although Seventeen is a top-rated boy band with fantastic songs, the fact remains that the band is underrated, and therefore, this is an attempt at making the world realize, that how much they have missed out. The band, which debuted back in 2015, has thirteen members, S.Coups (leader of the hip-hop unit and as a whole), Wonwoo, Mingyu, Vernon, Woozi (leader of Vocal Sub Unit), Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, Seungkwan, Hoshi (leader of performance/dance unit), Jun, The8, and Dino.

1. The Meaning Behind Seventeen

There has been a lot of confusion as to why the band is called Seventeen, with only thirteen members. An explanation for that is that the thirteen-membered group is divided into three subunits. Therefore 13 members, added with three subunits and one group is a total of seventeen, which also happens to be their average age when everybody joined the group.

2. The Diversity In The Group

Not everybody in the group is a South Korean. Two of the member's named Jun and The8 are Chinese (Jun comes from Shenzhen, The8 from Liaoning, China), Vernon was born and raised in New York and Joshua comes from Los Angeles. The rest of the members of the group are South Korean, though.

3. Not All Members Debuted

Thirteen is a considerable number for members in a group, although many Korean Bands are enormous in numbers, initially Seventeen, almost had sixteen members in the group (Pre-debut), had the members not left or been taken out, the significance of Seventeen, wouldn’t have been there. Therefore the importance developed later on, after their appearance as a group.

4. Starting Of The Group

Although the group debuted in 2015, it started forming or was in its initial stage in 2012. Before their debut, the boy band appeared as backup performances for other K-Pop bands, some famous ones like Hello Venus and After School. They were frequently spotted as dancers at the back.

5. Coups

The leader and main rapper of the group, S Coups, was supposed to debut with the boy band NU’EST, but that didn’t work out. The story behind the name Coups is that it means Success, with S included, which stands both for his real name’s first letter and S for Seventeen.

6. The Previous Debut Of S Coups

As already mentioned, he was supposed to be a part of NU’EST. Still, given that S. Coups is also the member who trained the longest, he was also a member of the not-so-famous band named Tempest, because of his long training period, he is also known as the father of the group.

7. Street Casted

This is not shocking news for many of the fans, but most of the members of the group did not audition to be an idol but were street-casted (which is how many of the idols in Korea get cast) and asked to audition. Both the members from the US, Vernon, and Joshua, were either introduced or scouted. Joshua performed at a Korean festival and got scouted.

8. Woozi, The Composer

Most of Seventeen’s songs are self-produced, and Woozi has composed most of the pieces for the band. They are set apart from other groups for this reason because it's rare for a K-Pop group to be this involved in the direction and overall performance of an album and music production.

9. The Theme Of The Band

The theme or the central message of the band is Young Energy. They want to spread their vivacious energy and make everybody feel alive with their music. Their theme is pretty self-explanatory and has successfully been portrayed through many of their works.

10. Fan Base

Seventeen call their fandom CARATS and even as their diamonds. The name was decided based on votes, and other options for the fandom were Tinker Bell, Wish, Same, Tinvely, or Wennie. Many people are glad that the name Carat was selected when the leader announced while mentioning how they shine because of their fans.
