Movie Digest

Welcome to the Guesthouse is a South Korean movie that was released in 2020. The movie tells the story of Joon Geun, who is a university student, looking for work, while postponing his graduation. Because he doesn’t apply for the winter semester, naturally Joon Geun gets kicked out of his university dorm. Being homeless and out of work, he searches for part-time work that will provide him a place to stay and survive the harsh winter, he stumbles across a surfing guesthouse and even though he has zero experience in surfing, begs to be hired. He gets hired and learns to surf eventually, but unfortunately picks a fight with a rich brat Seong Min, who challenges him to a surfing battle, with the condition that the loser leaves the sea. Being an amateur surfer, Joon Geun trains with the season member of the Guesthouse. While he is preparing for the surfing battle, he gets a call from his advisor about a job interview that would be held on the same day of the surfing battle, leaving Joon Geun in dilemma.

The Feel-Good Part

The location of the movie was truly a treat for the eyes. The picturesque location of the movie will surely help you go into a relaxing mood. The movie also sends out a positive message of listening to your heart and following what your heart wants.

The Disappointing Factor

Welcome to the Guesthouse doesn’t stand out much, the plotline, acting, and screenplay are average. The plotline and script are sorely lacking and poorly written, which could have been better.

In-Depth Analysis

The storyline of the movie is a simple one, where the lead character of the movie, an amateur surfer, unfortunately, gets carried away in a fight with a rich boy and loses his temperament, which results in a surfing battle between the two. The screenplay is written averagely, supported by somehow just average acting. The whole subject line of the movie in itself was weak. The movie doesn’t have any memorable scenes or dialogues that will remain with the viewers. The movie is simply written and directed in a manner that will fail to hold on to the audience’s attention span.

Star Power

Lee Hak Joo plays the titular character of Joon Geun. Park Sun-young plays the role of Yoo-Na, Shin Min Jae plays the role of Tae Woo, Shin Jae Hoon plays the role of Won Jong, Kim Bum Jin plays the role of Sung Min, Kim Yoon Ji plays the role of Ji-ho, and Kim Joo Heon plays the role of Gi Hoon. Veteran actor Song Jong Hak plays the guest role of the professor. The movie is directed by Shim Yohan, while Lee Seung Moo and Choi Yong Bae are the producers.

Overall Opinion

The movie, Welcome to the Guesthouse has a plain screenplay and narration, which results in a rather boring watch. The movie fails to keep the audience hooked on till the end, and it is very much likely that the viewers will eventually drop the movie midway. Overall though the movie somehow manages to be average, I would still not recommend you to watch this one, because of its boring screenplay, and there are better movies of the same genre to invest your time in.
