Movie Digest

Set in Hong Kong, the movie traces the search of two cops, Detective Cham is reinstated and a rookie cop Will Yam, are partnered to chase a serial killer. The film also dwells on an informant with a sordid past but is on the journey of improvement, and shares a connection with one of the cops.

The Feel Good Part

The fabulous visuals and cinematography that brings out the dark side of Hong Kong. Stellar performances with a special mention to the Chinese female actor Cya Liu, who plays the informant Wong To. Wong To’s desperation and need to redeem herself is brought to life, and remains with the audience long after the movie has ended.

The Disappointing Factor

No major negative factor except that in some scenes especially between the detective and the informant is borderline abusive and also the violence.

In-Depth Analysis

The movie is on the same lines of the les films noir that have been made famous by Hollywood directors such as Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino. It is set in Hong Kong, wherein two detectives Cham (recently reinstated) and Yam (rookie) search for a brutal serial killer who leaves women dead, and their arms chopped off.

The clue to solving the killer’s identity is in the hands of Cham’s informant Wong To. In the past, Wong To, in a drug induced state had run over Cham’s wife and daughter; thereby, making Cham angry and abusive towards her.  In an effort to make up for the mistake, Wong To agrees to join them in their hunt, making her vulnerable to the serial killer. It takes us into the lesser-known side of Hong Kong which in itself is a puzzle that needs to be solved.

The movie’s end is not revealed as it would ruin the fun.

Star Power

The movie has veteran actor Gordon Lam who plays the role of the devoted yet broken officer Cham and is ably supported by Mason Lee as the rookie Yam. But the piece de resistance of the movie is the performance of Cya Liu as Wong To. She shines in the movie bringing out the struggle of balancing redemption with betrayal.

Overall Opinion

If you are into the noir films such as Seven, then this movie is for you.
