Drama Digest
Vincenzo Cassano, a tactful consigliere to an Italian mafia, flees to South Korea amidst a mafia war to tear down Geumga Plaza, and finds gold hidden below it. He meets lawyer, Hong Cha Young, and the residents of Geumga Plaza, and finds a foe in the chairman of the Babel Group. Vincenzo attempts to face off against Babel, the corrupt conglomerate in this action-packed drama.
The Feel-Good Part
The drama gets you hooked on to it right from episode one. The slapstick comedy with the gangster theme is oddly eye-catching. Right from the hero himself to the villain, the characters are well-rounded and have a certain charm to them. With the acting being immaculate and the plot executed well, the drama is a must-watch.
The Disappointing Factor
Even with the star-studded cast and the mafia theme, Vincenzo fails to keep up to the expectations of the audience. The drama, unfortunately, has significantly little to do with the Italian mafia trope, and more to do with the clichèd hero syndrome and Vincenzo constantly being the harbinger of justice against Babel. The action scenes tend to get a bit repetitive, and there are a lot of filler scenes.
In-Depth Analysis
Written by acclaimed screenwriter Park Jae Bum (the writer of “The Fiery Priest”), the drama has a humorous and thrilling appeal, while at the same time highlighting the importance of social justice.
The drama has a subtle romance and a loveable friendship between the residents of the plaza that strikes a chord with the viewers. The acting of the villains is a total scene-stealer and helps overlook the plot holes. The drama makes you gasp, cry and laugh and go through a roller coaster of emotions with the characters.
Star Power
Vincenzo has a star student cast with Song Joong-Ki makes his long-awaited come back into television series with this drama. Ok Taec-yeon from the band 2PM and Jeon Yeo- Been play their roles effortlessly.
Overall Opinion
This drama is an excellent start to watching Korean dramas.
