The drama is based in Xinyuan Civilization, in the year 253 where the increase in crime and its relationship to "zero-degree empathy" emerged as a topic of study. The murder of a deliveryman becomes the talk of the town, and the culprit is revealed to have "zero-degree empathy". Officer Luo Wei Zhao is in charge of the case.

Three-Body drama is based in 2007 when Shi Qiang, a counterterrorism officer, sought the help of Wang Miao, one of China's famous nanomaterials scientists, to investigate a series of unusual suicides of people who are related to the field of science.
