Drama Digest:
Mr. Gu is a story of two people with contrasting personalities, and to everyone’s surprise, they somehow end up in a contractual marriage. The show starts by showing the leads with cliched temperaments. The show progresses as we see them get to know each other better and find ways to work out their personality differences—the classic story of enemies to lovers after crossing a lot of hurdles together. The drama shows the importance of mental health and sheds light on the cruelty of unhealed trauma. The show also has a second lead couple with their own romantic story.
In-Depth Analysis:
Everything is better than expected. All the bickering between the leads makes the show funny. Although the misunderstandings between the characters feel a little frustrating, the overall plot line is quite good. What makes it different from a typical cliche plot are the well-written character and the portrayal of ups and downs in life. The show attempts to portray women more positively and sensibly and doesn’t follow the usual plot of two women fighting over a man.
The Feel-Good Part:
Even when the story gets expected, it is still fun to watch as the actors do their best to keep the audience engaged, from the constant bickering to forming their emotional bond. The female lead may seem like a pushover. She proves the audience wrong by constantly standing up for herself. It has cute and fuzzy romance scenes that can melt hearts.
Disappointing Factor:
The story is very cliched. At some points may feel like it is not making any progress which can be annoying for the viewers. Passively shows women as trouble makers and always needy of a man to solve their problems or get them out of it. The male lead is the typical cold-hearted person and doesn’t have much personality to himself except for being cold to everyone. The story is slow-paced.
Star Power:
The actors did a fantastic job. The written characters are to be incapable of forming a bond. The actors do their best to create chemistry. The female lead Yan Zhi Chao despite being very young, gives an excellent performance. The actors add visual highlights to the drama.
Overall Opinion:
The drama is a good watch for those who enjoy watching cliche romance. A great romance and funny characters make the show a must-watch.
