Drama Digest

“Candle in the Tomb: The Lost Caverns” is a direct follow-up to the show “Candle in the Tomb” from 2016. The story comes from the second book in the “Ghost Blows Out the Light” series written by Zhang Mu Ye. The events take place in 1982 and follow three friends, Shirley Yang, Hu Ba Yi, and Wang Pan Zi, who are explorers and experts in uncovering ancient tombs.

The Feel-Good Part

The cinematography of the drama is well executed. The visuals and special effects are excellent as well. The mix of magic, traditional stories, old times, and real-world ideas like Taoism and Feng Shui all come together in a really interesting story.

The Disappointing Factor

The old actors of the show were missed as the audience is not very familiar with the new actors. There was also a lot of dragged drama throughout the series.

 In-Depth Analysis

Hu Ba Yi, Shirley Yang, and Wang Pang Zi are on an adventure in a strange tomb in Shaanxi. Shirley Yang goes to the Longling Maze Grottos to check out strange markings on old fossil pieces. She meets Hu Ba Yi there, who, along with Wang Pang Zi, has just gotten away from an old city. They all team up for another exciting tomb exploration. They go to Shaanxi to explore a mysterious maze called Longling Maze, aiming to find a legendary book called the Book of Dragon Bones. This book supposedly has the secret to locating something called the Dust Bead, which can break an old curse. The show typically starts with Fatty and his greed embroiling Hu Ba Yi in another get rich quick scheme involving possible tomb robbing in a town near the Longling Maze Grottos. Except it is a trap set by thieves and the two and gold tooth are soon in trouble until they get semi rescued by Chen Xia Zi. Some misadventures later they eventually cross paths with Shirley Yang and this is when the story kicks into high gear and here, the tomb exploring starts.
