Drama Digest

The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty (成化十四年) is a Chinese period drama with a whopping total of 48 episodes that aired between 1st April 2020 and 24th  April 2020. With the careful direction by Yang Huan, the television series is based on a well-known novel of the same title by Meng Xi Shi. The story centres around three male characters from different class backgrounds, occupying different class positions in society.

The Feel-Good Part

As many fans have pointed out, the series deserves its recognition for exploring male romantic relationships. It is an era when the Chinese government has employed strict regulations curbing homosexual relationships in society. The historical mystery series traverses the lives of three individuals who are determined to join hands and solve cases, maintaining order and balance in the kingdom. Another feature to watch is the charming chemistry between the leads that keeps you hooked to your seats.

The Disappointing Factor

Although marketed as a “bromance” by the creative producers, The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty falls short of the viewers’ expectations of the anticipated romantic scenes between Darren Chen and Fu Meng Bo.

In-Depth Analysis

We find Tang Fan, a sixth rank government official, and Sui Zhou, a palace guard and martial arts professional, on the scene. They solve a criminal case that earns them a lot of popularity among the district dwellers. Their unique talents compel them to collaborate on future issues. And the two hit it off very well, seeing their fast friendship. Things take a different route when upon travelling the village of Henan, Tang Fan finds a corpse near the esteemed tomb of the late Northern Song Emperor. More digging into this illicit affair reveals a far-reaching scale of events, something Tang Fan was better left unknown.

Star Power

The cast comprises Darren Chen as Tang Fan, Fu Meng Bo as Sui Zhou, Liu Yao Yuan as Wang Zhi/Yang Fu, Huang Yang Tian Tian as Dong Er, Liu Cheng Jun as Jia Kui, Alyssa Chia as Wan Zhen Er, Fang Xiao Li as Empress Dowager Zhou, Cai Heng as Emperor Chenghua, and He Nan as Duo Er La.

Overall Opinion

The story of two quick-witted officials is a perfect, long binge for the weekend. Assuredly, the audience gains insight into the early-modern period of China and the workings of society at that time.
