In the Joseon dynasty, hair that was black, balloon-like, muddy and rich was prerequisite for beauty. While hair that were short and stiff are considered to be ugly and with a negative impact. In 1920, women with short hair had a strong meaning for women to challenge the established system. But now also women cut their hair, it is the movement that removes the social definition of  “feminine”, escaping corset movement.

The Feel-Good Part

The movie invites women to a path of acceptance and discovery and desires that the new generation grows without self-blame and conditions. This documentary holds a confident tone of voice throughout the movie and has a great quality of retaining positive attitude. A sense of freedom and happiness transpires from these stories of rejection of the social defining ideas of a woman.

The Disappointing Factor

During the shoot, some people refused to step forward for an interview.

It is not just women being obsessed with their looks, but it is also the social surroundings that force them to do so.

In-Depth Analysis

This documentary specifically focuses on women’s hair and importance of cutting one’s hair short. It is an individual’s decision to apply makeup or not, to wear or not wear heels. But, the act of going for a short haircut is much more lasting and can’t be reversed until it grows out. Women are pressurized to meet the social expectations and spend their significant time, energy and money into fashionable dresses and makeup.

Women participating in the movement, desires a life that allows you to live freely qnd get away from men’s judgements. They want to live life on their own terms and as leading part in the society.

Star Power

Lee mi-hae tries to reflect over issues that are deeper such as liberty and self acceptance. She initiated working on a documentary about the movement, conducting interviews with many women from different fields such ad, you tubers, actors, professors, students, authors etc. along with some part of her own story. She is a free soul and creates new direction for herself and many other women out there.

Overall Opinion

Escape the corset is more than an ordinary movement. It is a social change, a social movement. It is shot like an amazing talking-head-style documentary, punctuated with cute animated scenes. The movie is a worth watch as it unfolds following a logic development.
