Movie Digest

Inspired by a real doctor who euthanized 130 patients, the movie talks about mercy-killing or euthanasia. The novel “Doctor Death no Isan” written by Nakayama Shichiri gives the plot for the movie. An unknown person named Dr. Death performs mercy-killing for those who ask for it. He also carries out organ transplantation of the dead. The patients suffering from terminal illnesses request Dr. Death to euthanize them. As a result, there were occurrences of serial deaths. To investigate this, two detectives Hayato Inukai and Asuka Takachiho are assigned. Meanwhile, Detective Hayato Inukai’s daughter Sayaka suffers from a terrible kidney illness. So, she asks Dr. Death to perform euthanasia on her. What will happen to Sayaka? Is Dr. Death a murderer or a form of God freeing people from suffering? Watch the movie to find out!

The Feel-Good Part

The movie successfully conveys what it wants to. The acting is also good. The action scenes are satisfying, especially Asuka Takachiho’s. Dr. Death’s unknown identity increases the curiosity of the viewers about him. The second half of the movie contains a few memorable scenes. It is thrilling to watch how the story progresses. A detective’s daughter is one of the requesters of euthanasia, which makes the plot more interesting.

The Disappointing Factor

The music does not suit the vibe of the movie. The theme of the music suits adventures and unfortunate events, which is not the case in the movie. It is more of a story of saving a life. It would have been better if the vibes matched so that one could enjoy the movie with thematic music. They could have explored more about the comradeship between Detective Hayato Inukai and Detective Asuka Takachiho. Few unnecessary scenes could have been removed or cut from the movie. The plot was messy at times and raised a few questions. It is comparatively slow in the first half of the movie.

In-Depth Analysis

Dr. Death is seen as God in the form of a doctor to end the suffering of terminally ill patients. The plot focuses on saving people, either from Dr. Death’s point of view or from the detectives’ point of view. From Dr. Death’s point of view, it is saving the people from suffering, while from the detectives’ point of view, it is saving people from euthanization. Euthanasia is seen as mercy-killing by the patients, whereas it is considered murder by the detectives. Dr. Death accepts the euthanasia requests through a dark website, which is illegal. Sayaka, Hayato Inukai’s daughter, is one of Dr. Death’s clients. Sayaka’s case is the key to the case of the series of euthanized people. Two detectives Hayato Inukai and Asuka Takachiho are assigned to solve this.

Star Power

Hayato Inukai is portrayed by Go Ayano and Keiko Kitagawa plays the character  Asuka Takachiho. Their presence is strong, and their acting is exceptional. The duo is dynamic, and the overall performance of the whole cast is good.

Overall Opinion

The movie has a unique theme of euthanasia and informs the viewers about it. There are a lot of aspects making it worth watching.
