Movie Digest

Chaldea agents Ritsuka Fujimaru and Mash Kyrielight travel to Camelot in order to meet the heroes of that realm. Mash and Ritsuka were rayshifted to Jerusalem in 1273 AD, in the middle of a desert where the Holy City of Camelot is thought to exist. A strong-willed young woman named Artoria Pendragon led the Knights of the Round Table in carrying out gruesome executions to save the chosen few. Ritsuka and Mash join forces with the knight Bedivere and the other servants along the route to return the era to its proper state.

The Feel Good Part

The best aspect of Fate/Grand Order is its charismatic characters, and if you’ve read the book and are engaged with the characters, seeing them move around in animation will bring you delight. Arash’s grand moment in the finale was the part I was looking forward to, and it was executed flawlessly. The staging was done in setpieces that were enjoyable to see. Along with his narrative, Bedivere’s opening scene offered intriguing images. The Noble Phantasm of Arash was well-represented aesthetically. Despite the fact that the action parts were brief, the movie was nonetheless entertaining.

The Disappointing Factor

The production value was not very impressive by current anime film standards. The characters aren’t particularly lively, and some of them were created by more than one person, making them appear odd. The story had so much more potential, but it was whittled down to a small blip. A  large portion of the original narrative was wasted.

In-Depth Analysis

The Camelot arc was set in Jerusalem during the Crusades, and its main goal was to show the darker side of the seemingly idealized “holy” Knights. Led by the female King Arthur, The Knights of the Round Table are the main antagonists of the story, since they believe in only protecting the selected few while exterminating the rest of the inhabitants. However, Bedivere, one of the Knights, remained loyal to King Arthur and resisted the horrible crusade. Instead, he joins forces with Mash and Ritsuka to put an end to the mission of the Round Table.

Star Power

Nobunaga Shimazaki, noted for his work in Fruits Basket and the Disastrous Life of Saiki K, provided the voice of Ritsuka Fujimaru. Rie Takahashi provided the voice of Mash Kyrielight, and Mamoru Miyano provided the voice of Bedivere, who previously provided the voice of Light Yagami from the popular anime Death Note.

Overall Opinion

Due to plot cuts, the film’s narrative loses some weight, but it still features strong, likable characters who are effectively staged.
