Movie Digest

The Sacrifice is a Chinese war drama film that was released in 2020. The timeline of the movie is 1953 when Korean War was at its final stage. The film largely focuses on the events at the last stage of the war when The Battle of Kumsong was launched by The People’s Volunteer Army in a large campaign. Amidst the heavy bombing and shortage of supply, the armies give their all to be on time on the battleground, and send enough forces to the front line of Kumsong, while defending themselves. The film tells the rarely known history of Chinese volunteers and their sacrifice during the Korean War.

The Feel-Good Part

The film shows three different perspectives of different segments, which are also directed by three different directors, which gives the audience a large perspective on battlefields. Many people are aware of the sacrifice and participation of Chinese troops in the Korean War, this film surely passes on the history in a rather gripping manner. The cinematography of The Sacrifice is praiseworthy, as well as the music.

The Disappointing Factor

The pace of the film is a little slow, which might bore many. There are also some scenes that were repeated a few times, which might feel a little weird. There was also a small attempt at creating a love angle which felt a bit unnecessary in a war drama.

In-Depth Analysis

The Sacrifice is a film that was produced in a span of two months, which is commendable as the film turned out pretty decent. The element of three different perspectives of the film is quite creative, making it stand out from the rest of the war films. However, the perspective of American pilots was a little clichéd and exaggerated, which felt dragged. The acting of the cast was truly phenomenal as well as the excellent cinematography.

Star Power

Zhang Yi plays the role of Zhang Fei, Wu Jing plays the role of Guan Lei, Li Jiu Xiao plays the role of Liu Hao, and Vision Wei plays the role of Yan Rui. The supporting casts include Ou Hao as Company commander Qi, Deng Chao as Gao Fu Lai, Qiu Tian as Correspondent, Zhu Zi Yu as Zhang Lian Fa, and Liu Xian Da as Ha La Zi. Actor Wan Pei Xin had a guest role as Ma Lei Zi.

Overall Opinion

The Sacrifice is a film that stays true to its title and shows the sacrifice that ordinary people and the military had done while in a war. The film makes for quite an entertaining film if you like the war-action genre. This film has a patriotic theme and sheds light on the heroic deeds of the Chinese during the Korean War. Overall, The Sacrifice is a pretty decent film with an interesting storyline and direction, which is very original and creative.
