Drama Digest

Three women, Han Ji-Yeon, Ahn So-hee, and Kang Ji-koo meet up regularly to have drinks at the end of their workday as they share their joys and frustrations. They talk about their daily life as well as reminisce about their past. ‘Work Later, Drink Now’ is a slice-of-life drama that chronicles the lives of these characters bonding over their love of alcohol and highlights their close friendship. It slowly reveals their personalities and characteristics by narrating their past and showing their present day.

The Feel-Good Part

The portrayal of female friends who don’t censor and discuss anything and everything under the sun is exhilarating to witness. It is refreshing to see them support each other. And the character differences of the three are such that they complement one another. The characters don’t shy away from discussing a host of what may be considered taboo topics. The drama is funny, and the jokes land without falling flat, ensuring a good laugh. There is not a single dull moment. It conveys sensitive and heavy topics without making the mood too tense and is light-hearted. We learn about their experiences and the hurdles they face in their life. But as they discuss this at night over drinks, they know they can always count on their friendship.

The Disappointing Factor

Some may find the excessive reliance on alcohol and drinking culture a turn-off from the series. It is toned down as the drama progresses.

In-Depth Analysis

Adapted from a webtoon, the three main characters work in different fields. Han Ji-Yeon’s livelihood is working as a yoga instructor. Ahn So-hee is in the entertainment industry and is a writer for a variety show. And Kang Ji-koo depends on the new age profession of live streaming herself making origami. They aren’t caricatures but people with complex characters that are relatable to everyone on one level or another. They seem eccentric and honest at the same time. With time other people in their lives are introduced. And their backgrounds are unveiled by showcasing their past. There are certain characters who play a part in more than one of the friend’s lives.

The bond they share is the true star of the show. They support one another through their difficulties and celebrate their wins. It succeeds in making one feel various emotions without overwhelming the viewer and is well-balanced. While the ending may not be definitive and open-ended, it is because another season of the series will be in the works and is something to look forward to for fans.

Star Power

The casting is well done. The lack of chemistry in a story-driven by friendship would have otherwise been quite the disappointment. Han Sunhwa, Lee Sun-bin, and Jung Eun-ji pull you into the drama through their performances. Choi Si-won portrays Kang Bok-goo, the love interest of the character Ahn Soo-hee.

Overall Opinion

The depiction of the women’s friendship is done well in this drama. Overall, the humor will not disappoint, and it addresses an array of amusing experiences that people may have in real life.
