Drama Digest

It is the year 2030. Life on Earth is slowly coming to an end and an effort to populate Mars must begin. In order to properly understand the living conditions on Mars, scientists must choose four people to journey to this new planet. These four people will carry the hopes of the entire human population and their future. These four people need to be extremely special and skilled. They must be compatible in order to get along and bring out the best team effort. Which group of people will be chosen? Which 4 people will carry the weight of the human race’s future on their shoulders?

The Feel-Good Part

The first thing that catches your eye about this drama is how larger-than-life the story is. I mean the whole plot is about an effort to populate Mars! Usually, when you think of the Sci-Fi genre, you tend to remember movies such as “Gravity” or “Martian” which have a serious tone. Yet, “Wake Atte Kasei ni Sumimashita: Erabareshi 4nin” comes with a refreshing approach to this storyline. The comic element is very prominent and you often find yourself tearing up with laughter. The antics of the characters are hilarious and you cannot help but think of them as children in the bodies of adults. The series starts off with a slow beginning in episode one, but things appear to improve with each episode. There is a highly distinctive sense of humour which may not be apparent to everyone. On the surface, there is a lot of slap-stick comedy but there are deeper, inside jokes that aren’t easy to pick up on. For this reason, the series is often misunderstood by people or they get confused. In order to really relish this series, one must try and not keep too many serious expectations. Instead, let the show reveal itself in its own time!

The Disappointing Factor

It’s impossible to ignore the obvious and slightly melancholy reality that nothing in this series hasn’t been seen a million times before. From beginning to end, a sense of over-familiarity pervades the series. As all of the standard story clichés are thrown out, you can practically predict what will happen next. There is never any real tension or uncertainty about where things are going. This lack of novelty exacerbates the film’s main flaw: a lethargic, disinterested middle portion in which none of the characters are adequately explored. Despite the cast’s excellent performance, there is no time for the audience to relate with the characters.

In-Depth Analysis

“Wake Atte Kasei ni Sumimashita: Erabareshi 4nin” is best because it never takes itself too seriously. The series is a sci-fi comedy with goofy one-liners, outrageously dramatic stories, and science-defying space activities. While you’ll love the narrative, images, and arcs, you won’t get the tremendous plot shock you’d anticipate from a production of this calibre. You are constantly underwhelmed as you try to think that you will not be able to predict what will happen next. But, for the most part, everything goes as planned. Nonetheless, the script had some potential if it had been directed and produced properly.

Star Power

The Drama series is recounted in omnibus fashion, with four new lead actors appearing in each of the six planned episodes. Another reason you weren’t able to connect with the characters was because of this. The majority of the cast did their best in their jobs. Kenta Suga, Yamoto Yuma, and Miura Shohei were among those that did a commendable job. All of them are veterans of the Japanese cinema and television industries.

Overall Opinion

“Wake Atte Kasei ni Sumimashita: Erabareshi 4nin” is a good choice if you are looking for something light to watch. Even if it lacks depth in its story-telling, it is still a pretty decent series to binge on. Especially because it has such great actors, it is totally worth giving this show a chance!
