Drama Digest

The series takes place in the Tang Dynasty. Li Jing Liu is a business tycoon and Long Ao Yi is the leader of the Longzhu Sect. The two overlords are pit against one another as a mysterious burglary spreads across the city.  Long Ao Yi represents the Lower Jiuliu which includes thieves, seamstresses, candy makers and prostitutes, while Li Jing Liu is the representative of the Upper Jiuliu which includes elites and other silk tycoons like himself. The two must find a way to put their differences aside in order to fight against foreign evils. The two fight against each other and later with one another in different regions, such as Jiangsu and the business world.

The Feel-Good Part

The plot of the series is great as it depicts the class differences between the protagonists quite well. It explores the conflict this causes between the characters because this in a way that is quite engaging. The characters are well-written and complex enough to intrigue viewers. The romance is really light yet intense at the same time as it has a lot of conflict while still giving the easy-going scenes enough importance. The beginning of the show is quite funny, which will help draw in viewers from the very beginning as it is filled with entertaining segments. The Original Soundtrack of the show is great and suits the show well as it is intense yet romantic. Despite the show having commentary on class differences, it never feels like it’s a heavy subject, the light-hearted tone of the show is maintained well throughout the duration of the show for the most part. There are many side characters that provide a lot of substance to the show as they move the story forward as well as entertain the audience.

The Disappointing Factor

The show is a little messy with its story. Some plotlines have a very heavy build up but don’t deliver as they come off as convoluted, confusing and borderline incomprehensible, which may lose certain viewers after a certain point as they may think that the show isn’t worth it. The romance between the protagonists was not paced well; it started too late, which doesn’t let the audience sit with the characters in their new dynamic, especially after the build-up. Some people may feel like the tension didn’t lead to much of an outcome. The story drags quite a bit midway, which gets dreary and boring to watch as you may have to wait for it to pick up its pace.

In-Depth Analysis

The drama is a complete package of action, romance with sprinkles of humour that make it the perfect show to binge over a couple of weeks. The emotional scenes land very well because the characters are easy to root for.

Star Power

All the performances were excellent. From the protagonists to the side characters, everyone added their own unique touch to the show that comes together to deliver on the story and its characters really well.

Overall Opinion

The show is quite well made for the most parts despite faltering in certain area but it’s definitely worth a shot.
