Oscars, The Academy Awards are the most prestigious awards respected by the worldwide artistic/entertainment industry. It is a powerful title to earn for the country and for that individual. Asians in Oscars have started dominating their presence through their stunning creations. May it be a feature film, an original song, directions, actor nominations, or a subtitled movie of their nationality. The list includes, South Korean, Chinese, Indian, etc. Asian creators made history by winning the Oscar’s Academy Awards long ago.

1. Chloé Zhao

She is a Chinese filmmaker and director. Her Nomadland film of 2020 was her superhits in the Oscar awards. Chloe Zhao made a notable history by winning two awards at 93rd Academy Awards in 2021- ‘Academy Award for Best Directing’ and ‘The Academy Award for Best Picture.’ Nomadland film, based on a non-fiction book by Jessica Bruder, talks about a woman living as a real-life nomad with fellow nomads. The lead character in the movie wins the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

 

2. Youn Yuh-Jung

Young Yun-Jung is a South Korean 75 age old veteran actress. Yuh-Jung is a character in the movie Minari who stole the show with her acting skills. And as a result, she has the ‘Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role award along with her name. She is now starring in the Pachinko drama of 2022, which is receiving a vast fanbase. The film Minari is about South Korean immigrants and their survival attempts to build lives on U.S lands.

 

3. Bong Joon-Ho

We can’t miss this director’s name in our Asian Oscard Awards list. He dominated the 2020 Oscar Awards by winning a total of four major awards for his Parasite movie. ‘Academy Awards for Best Picture,’ ‘Academy Awards for Best Directing,’ ‘Academy Award for Writing (Original Screenplay),’ and ‘Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.’ It is the only non-English, subtitled movie on the frontier of the Oscars in 92 years. The parasite movie is a story of two families of different social classes and their socio-economic inequalities.

 

4. Satyajit Ray 

Satyajit Ray was a real asset to the Indian film industry. He was an Indian director, lyricist, screenwriter, documentary filmmaker, author, magazine editor, music composer, illustrator, and calligrapher. One of the major hits, his movie Pather Panchali is to date studied by filmmakers and media students. Out of many awards, he achieved ‘Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences (Academy Honorary Award) at 64th Academy Awards in 1992. The same year we lost a gem.

 

5. Miyoshi Umeki

Miyoshi was a Japanese-American actress and singer. Her movie Sayonara is a war storyline-based romance drama. Sayonara is a 1957 released love story between a Japanese woman and a U.S military man during the Korean War. She received ‘The Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Supporting role.’ Around four Academy Awards were the accomplishment of this film. Miyoshi passed away in 2007, working under black and white as well as colored versions of television.

 

6. Ang Lee 

Ang Lee is a famous director born in Taiwan. He earned many nominations for Oscar in various categories. Ang Lee has achieved three Academy Awards: Best Foreign Language Film for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Best Director for Brokeback Mountain, and Best Director for Life of Pi. His contribution to the Taiwan industry and the films makes him well-known worldwide.

 

7. Timmy Yip

He has worked as an art director and designer for fiction movies. Timmy Yip has won the Oscar Academy Award for a Best art director for the film- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. He is also a Costume Designer & Photographer and has won a BAFTA award for film costume design.

 

8. Gulzar

Sampooran Singh Kalra, Gulzar is a famous Indian poet, lyricist, author, screenwriter, and film director who won an Oscar award for original song in the film Slumdog Millionaire. His precious words still flaunt in the song Jai by winning the Academy Award for Best Music in 2009.

 

9. Bhanu Athaiya

Bhanu Athaiya is an Indian costume designer and painter. She is the first Indian person to win the Oscar Award for the film Gandhi- Academy Awards for best costume design. She has worked on over 100 films with famous Indian filmmakers.

 

10. A.R. Rahman

Allah Rakha Rahman, A.R. Rehman is an Indian music composer, record producer, singer, and songwriter. He has been in many nominations for the Academy Awards. He won two Oscar awards for Best original score and another for the track, the original title song- Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire film.
