Anime Digest

This is a Japanese Anime film trilogy about the male protagonist discovering his love for surfing after denying surfing all his life.

The Feel-Good Part

The vibe of the show is charming and it has a fresh feel to it. The character design is decent as the characters are fit and good-looking.

The Disappointing Factor

Even if the vibe of the show is charming, it’s a bit unrealistic. This is because it has scenes like the protagonist immediately getting the hold of surfing like a pro on his very first attempt despite never having any experience in surfing. The most annoying point was the over-usage of the slow-motion effect. Plus, there is very little development in the relationships between the characters which is disappointing.

In-Depth Analysis

The story’s main protagonist is a 14-year-old boy named Masaki Hinaoka. He’s always disliked surfing despite it being his best friend’s favorite sport. Both of them spend a lot of time together but Masaki always says no to surfing. One day while Masaki was spending time on the beach, he found a boy who was surfing at sunrise. He immediately was attracted to the boy’s fit body, his intent, and his blonde hair. The boy’s name was Shou Akitsuki. Seeing an attractive person surfing, Masaki finds himself suddenly drawn towards surfing. He asks Shou to teach him how to surf to which Shou gladly agrees. Masaki without even trying succeeds at his very first attempt. It was almost like he had an inborn surfing quality in him. Day after day, Masaki gets better and better at surfing and soon becomes a pro. After realizing their self-potential, Masaki starts competing in local competitions. Through surfing, he gets to make many friends having different personalities. Sometime during the series, after days pass by, a tragic incident takes place which shakes the lives of Masaki and his best friend, Nalu. This incident is the sudden death of Shou by suicide without any apparent reason. It is assumed that it was maybe because he was depressed with his familial life but the show depicted no signs of depression in Shou while he was alive. This incident changes the lives of the surrounding characters. This is Masaki’s story of striving through all the difficulties.

Star Power

It is hard to say who shone the most on the show as most of the characters are dull and unrealistic.

Overall Opinion

Though fresh, the show has a lot of annoying characters and a lot of slow-mo scenes. It is said to be one of the dullest sports anime probably ever made.
