Anime Digest

Tokyo Mew Mew New is an adaptation of the original manga adaptation Tokyo Mew Mew and follows the same story. The original manga series was released in 2000. The story follows a young girl named Ichigo Momomiyo who gains special powers while on a date. She starts behaving like a cat and adopts the name Mew Ichigo. She has to get united with the other girls who also gained powers and call themselves the Mew Mews. They go on many adventures to reach their goal which is to defeat the Chimera Animas.

The Feel-Good Part

While some think that this series is very girly and basically for teenage girls, this series is very hooking and interesting. The animation is quite good. They have worked in many different genres such as romance, fantasy, comedy, teenage angst, and many more.

The Disappointing Factor

The series is quite repetitive, starting with the costumes of the characters. The characters have one cardinal trait, which is basically their whole personality. The characters seem mechanical and one-dimensional.

In-Depth Analysis

At the first glance, this series feels a lot like the Sailor Moon series. But the storyline is quite different from the former. While the cliché of a band of girls fighting against evil is used, it somehow doesn’t feel overused. The story is not as well detailed as other anime. The new spinoff has given a new twist to the old anime and the original manga. The fans of the original 2002 anime can find some differences between the two. There are differences in the appearances, storyline, and even gadgets and props used. There are some new characters introduced.

Star Power

The voice actors have been praised for their work and have been commended. The series features the talents of Yuki Tenma, Mirai Hinata, and Momoko Ishii. The opening and closing theme is performed by the idol group Smewthie, which is comprised of the main voice actresses.

Overall Opinion

The series is very good for people who wish to watch their first anime. It encompasses everything a true anime should have while retaining its sense of originality. While the fans of the old anime might find some things different and can’t help but compare the two, it is definitely a good anime as a standalone.
