TV Show Digest

Tone deaf and talented musicians are clumped together for the panellists and special guests to guess who is who. The last person standing will be revealed through a duet with the special guests.

The show calls different people to act as panellists and special guests who will participate in guessing participants as talented or tone deaf competitors. The special guests can process the elimination. If the singer is artistic, the person will have a chance to release a digital single, but if the singer is tone deaf, then the person will receive 5,000,000 Won. Each episode has three rounds: visual, lip sync and evidence. In the first round, the guests will guess if they are good singers or not. The next stage depicts the difference through the performance of lip syncing. The singer has to lip sync to the original song, which included the singer’s poor recording in the middle. The guest artist(s) should use the clues assembled on the mystery singers in the last and final round. The winner gets announced through a duet with the artists.

The Feel-Good Part

Funny moments blended with mesmerizing vocals with sprinkles of tension make the show warmly entertaining to watch.

The Disappointing Factor

Guessing the singers’ abilities by their looks seems meaningless but highlights the prevalence of judging by looks in Korean culture.

In-Depth Analysis

The format of the show gained popularity because of its fascinating twist. Rather than bringing out talented singers, it chose to add some spiciness to it by levelling up the tension and including tone-deaf people. Participants backed by goal-oriented stories is a common aspect of variety shows like this. But modelling it as a fierce competition based on a simple trick makes it more engaging. Korean shows tend to attach meticulously portrayed manoeuvres to enhance the tension of these shows. This one marks its uniqueness and is no less surprising.

The format was sold to many countries, including Germany, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Slovakia, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Romania, Cambodia and the Philippines. It proved its popularity by airing different versions in countries like the US, UK, Belgium and France, among 23 other countries with which it made export deals. It aired first in 2015. In 2016 it rose to the Emmy charts as a nomination. It is undoubtedly well known among Koreans.

Instead of holding it only as a competitive arena, as most singing competitions focus on, it makes the guests and panellists play a guessing game while fuelling and giving opportunities to talented singers. It inserts a beautiful pitch to make their dreams come true and get the golden chance to have a duet with the famed guests.
