Movie Digest

Spring Song (스프링 송) is a South Korean movie that was released on 21st April 2021. It is a dramatic musical movie that artistically captures the range there is to conflicts. Although it is hard to box this movie under a genre, it talks about the journey, conversations, meetings, evenings, and efforts that go into filming a film.

The Feel-Good Part

Released at the time of the sudden surge in Coronavirus cases in the Republic of Korea, Spring Song tries to infuse a sense of hope and promises that come with the spring season.

The Disappointing Factor

Although aimed to spread cheerful thoughts, the movie lacks a sense of direction that leaves the audience with rather flat emotions. So if you are a viewer looking for a stimulating experience, we recommend sitting through this eighty-three minutes-long documentary film about shooting a music video.

In-Depth Analysis

In the documentary, while working on an anticipated album titled Spring Song, Yoo Jung-sang and his peer, Lee Jun-Hwa, decide to collaborate and brainstorm ways to create a startling music video. Hoping to build a music video that leaves an everlasting impression, both of them travel to Japan for its known scenic setting. Like the dreamy climate in Japanese films, the preparations for the screenplay, plot and cinematography are under discussion. Lee Jun-Hwa even requests Japanese actor Akinori Kim and Korean musical actors Soo-Jin Jeong and Soon-Won to play worthwhile parts. But as the movie picks up its pace, conflicts arise and create a crisis in the team. The autobiographical story of Yoo Jung-Sang explores the complexities that go into a work of art – how certain events refuse to go according to one’s design and how one should never give up midway but rather find unthinkable ways to resolve.

Star Power

The starring cast includes Yoo Jun-Sang as Jun-sang himself, Kim Soo-Jin as Soo-Jin, Akinori as Nakagawa Aki, Jung Soon-Won as Soon-Won, Lee Jun-Hwa as Jun-Hwa, Park Seong-hoon as Seong-Hoon, Song Jae-Ho as Jae-Ho, and Ji-Jin as Jun-Hwa’s friend (voice).
