Movie Digest

The film is about a man whose dull life is upturned when he meets a troubled woman.

The Feel-Good Part

The movie is very complex and goes into depth about how complex human emotions can be. The male lead feels an attraction toward the female lead he can’t explain which is relatable to many people.

The Disappointing Factor

The female lead Ukiyo is disastrous, homeless, suicidal, and self-harming. Her character is not questioned and no explanation is given as to why she is that way. The main lead has more than one romance, and it isn’t clear if he loves the female lead or the idea of saving her.

In-Depth Analysis

Ukiyo is a very troubled soul. Even though the male lead has two other girlfriends who care for him, he is more interested in staying in a toxic relationship with her. It is unclear whether Ukiyo is a naïve woman or a femme fatale. The second angle this film focuses on is the main lead’s relationship with his other girlfriend who is very understanding and sweet.

Star Power

The movie stars Win Morisaki and Kaho Tsuchimura. It is directed by Koji Fukada.

Overall Opinion

This film is complicated and deep. It is the story of a salesman and a destructive girl and how they navigate dangerous waters. This film has won many awards, including at the Cannes Film Festival, the Geneva Film Festival, and the Tokyo International Film Festival.
