Movie Digest

This story is set in the late Qing Dynasty. The director Li  Lian Jun is another Chinese maker heavily influenced by Hong Kong 90s martial arts cinema. In “Hong Boxing”, Li recreates the Wong Fei Hung universe with a back story focused on his famed pork butcher student, Rong is a man of unquestionable integrity, but he is framed by scums of the martial world, Tsai Jinbao and Mou Chengwei. As he hits rock bottom, He is very determined not to succumb to evil. He aims to defeat his enemies and prove his innocence and be the next legend that brings glory to Hong Boxing.

The Feel-Good Part

Meng Fei does a good job in the various stages of Hung Ga fight scenes, whilst not having the same physical presence as Sammo Hung. Fei tries hard to act, but flares far better whenever with a butcher knife or flying fists. Bear Wang plays the love interest and provides an important link between the rival characters and Master Wong Fei Hung.

The Disappointing Factor

Wang lacks crucial love chemistry with Meng, making their moments together rather forced than romantic. However, it is the overacting and physical prowess of Du Yikang that manages to show the menace required as the main villain.

In-Depth Analysis

This drama leaves a lot to be desired and the story never goes deeper than the heavy words of wisdom verbally voiced by master Wong Fei Hung. In the end, the movie does an adequate job without breaking a sweat or two. It is a fully power-packed and fully entertained movie. A must watch movie for some action and thriller.

 Star Power

Hong Boxing never tries to be more than it can be and that’s both a pro and a con. The martial arts fight scenes are very well staged and the physical interplay between the Meng Fei and the rest of the rivals remains the highlight of the movie.

 Overall Opinion

It is a must-watch movie for the audience who likes to see action and thrilling kinds of movies. Especially for those who have an interest in the field of Martial Arts, this is a perfect binge-watch and fully entertainment movie.
