Movie Digest

A bus accident kills everyone on board except for the bus driver Yu Kunqiao and Mr. Wang’s son Wang Chuqi. The evidence appears to point to Kunqiao’s negligence as the cause of the accident. Mr. Wang had been passive-aggressive to Kunqiao for three years after the tragedy, pushing him to turn himself in. Kunqiao is facing difficulties remembering the event or determining whether the mishap was his fault because he had a concussion. Strange incidents begin to occur, and their lives turn upside down.

The Feel-Good Part

It has a good sense of mystery. Characters speak in riddles providing clues for the audience to puzzle together.

The Disappointing Factor

The ending can be confusing. The story seemed like it tried to explain what happened hastily, exposing everything at the end.

In-Depth Analysis

It contains some of the most significant and unexpected plot twists. The story takes you on an emotional roller coaster. The film creates a disturbing atmosphere and leaves the audience with the impression that something is seriously wrong with the family. The use of a dull color palette heightens a weird feeling that makes the viewer feel even more trapped and suffocated. The narrative becomes increasingly ridiculous, making it impossible to stay focused with merely the cast performances and the visual direction. What should have been a suspenseful psycho-thriller centered on a perfect upper-middle-class family begins with the most unlikely concepts and gradually tugs in numerous ways as the screenplay seeks shocks and effects. Even the ending does not adequately explain the situation. There are so many things that don’t make sense.

Star Power

The performance is excellent, with all actors and actresses successfully conveying a sense of desperation and melancholy to the film.

Overall Opinion

Because of its perplexing plot, Home Sweet Home is not a particularly engaging film. However, it remains a fascinating and mysterious experience with excellent acting.
