Movie Digest

Also known as “Beginning at 40”, the main character of this drama is Watanuki Shinobu, a manga creator. Shinobu has been making manga for the last 20 years and is married to Watanuki Yohei, with whom she has a son. However, the timid Shinobu lives a dreary life. Her husband cheats on and abuses her, but she cannot leave him because of their child and her financial dependence on him. Tired of her unfortunate circumstances, Shinobu is on the verge of giving up her dreams and work. However, suddenly her past mangas gain popularity online, which motivates her to create a new manga. She hires an assistant to help her out. Her assistant is a 22-year-old guy named Tachibana Chiaki. As Shinobu and Chiaki get to know each other, they realize how similar they are- both having been used by the people around them and never being allowed to be their age. Despite their considerable age gap, they find solace in each other and find their lives finally changing for the better, although many struggles still lie in their path.

The Feel Good Part

This series is a unique romance that explores the human condition. It often turns very dark and horrifying, with very complex and deep characters who are morally ambiguous. Every character is deeply flawed, which makes the show more realistic. The budding romance between the two leads is juxtaposed with the grim realities of their lives that almost makes their love impossible, and the superb script and direction do justice to their intricate relationship. The musical scores used in the scenes are also fascinating and complement the nerve-racking nature of the plot, setting a perfect pace for character and story development.

The Disappointing Factor

The show contains many triggering aspects, such as rape, prostitution, infidelity, and sexual and verbal abuse. Audiences might be affected by how these topics are explicitly handled in the series since they are major plot points. It is better to avoid the drama altogether if these are triggers for you.

 In-Depth Analysis

Japan has seen a rise in dramas that deal with the issue of infidelity. However, not all of them handle it in a sensitized manner. Shijukara is a show that deals with the matter brilliantly. It brings an intriguing plot and well-developed realistic characters, breathing fresh life into the genre.

Star Power

The young Itagaki Rihito’s acting as Chiaki is commendable. His acting skills dazzle the viewer as he executes a wide range of emotions flawlessly and adds new layers to the character he portrays. Yamaguchi Sayaka also does well in her role, and her sizzling chemistry with her co-star Itagaki elevates the drama and its appeal. The supporting cast brings their strengths to the production and enhances the spectacular performances of the lead pair.

Overall Opinion

If you are looking for a gritty and complex drama with morally grey characters who fight against the odds in their lives while making their own mistakes, this is the perfect watch for you.
