In-depth analysis

Modern love Tokyo depicts the lives of different people in each of its episodes in order to portray the message of being human. The first episode portrays the story of Mari, who is a single mother to her three-month-old baby. Mari aspires to become a successful businesswoman for which she wants to save up from her current job. She’s a doting mother who stays away from orthodoxy and believes in breastfeeding in public. However, when she brings her son to the office and tries to breastfeed him, she’s met with some unexpected grievances. The second episode tells the story of a woman named Kana, a teacher by profession. She teaches biology at a university, and now leads a single life. She and her ex-husband Keisuke have been divorced for almost six months and in order to get over this phase, she’s excited in trying out casual dating. She has created her account on an online dating app where she mostly hunts married men and gets involved in a physical relationship with them. She’s living her life unorthodoxly without caring about the judgment of the society.  Natsuko, a middle-aged woman, has been a divorcee for several years. Her failed marriage constituted her non-interest in dating any other man ever. But one day, her friend sets her up on a date with a man without her knowledge. After learning this, she gets angry and denies it at first but later somehow agrees to see the man. It turns out to be the best date of her life. The fourth story is about a couple of, Kengo and Mai, who have been married for three years. Among them, Mai is facing excessive stress from her workplace, which is hindering her mental health. The fifth story is about a fifty-year-old woman named Momoko who doesn’t believe in any relationship anymore and is dedicated to her job of being a news reporter. But this opinion of her changes after she meets a man of her liking and now enjoys spending time with him. Emma, a woman born in the United Kingdom, is an online English teacher to international students. She’s currently living in Los Angeles. Her life is majorly affected by a student’s question, “what is love?” The seventh episode portrays a woman named Tamami, who abstractly travels back in time after suddenly hearing a song she used to listen to 15 years ago. Along with this nostalgia, she also ends up meeting an old classmate of hers whose name is Rin. Rin plays a guitar alone in a gym, and their story continues from there.
