Drama Digest

“Hirowareta Otoko” is a Japanese 2022 drama series. It is a slice of life and a semi-fictional story. The story revolves around Satoru Matsudo. The drama shows his journey to becoming an actor. It is an American and Japanese joint production.

The Feel-Good Part

Despite receiving a lot of hate, they have well written the drama along with an outstanding performance by the actors. The story shows the psychological complexities that Satoru faced while growing up, which led to a bitter family relationship. The story is presented interestingly. There are many instances of flashbacks that won’t let the viewers get lost. The drama starts humorous and cheerful, leading to serious emotional moments later. It had the right amount of all elements, either humor, curiosity, or sadness. It perfectly depicts family relationships and brotherhood. The directing, photography, and editing are all well done.

The Disappointing Factor

The disappointing factor will be the poor English of the Japanese actors but it is understandable as an Asian character speaking foreign languages can be quite difficult. They pointed the transition from Japan to America out as utterly disappointing. They turned it into an American show relevant to Satoru’s brother. It turned into a typical mainstream American show from a perfectly ongoing Japanese drama. The show’s second half led to many fans dropping it at that point.

In-Depth Analysis

Satoru Matsudo had a dream of becoming an actor. To fulfill his dreams, he moves to Tokyo. He faces trouble in the industry as a newcomer, but his fate changes suddenly. He finds a flight ticket that belongs to a talent agency CEO. As time goes by, Satoru gains fame as an actor. Soon he gets a call from America and was happy thinking it to be an offer from Hollywood. Instead, it is his alienated older brother.

Star Power

The incredible performance of the cast made this drama remarkable. Nagano Taiga portrayed Matsuo Satoru excellently. He knew how to attract the viewer’s sympathy and how to transition his nature from quirky to serious. Kusanagi Tsuyoshi did not receive enough screen time but portrayed complex emotions well as a mysterious character. The rest of the characters also performed their roles well and supported the main cast.

Overall Opinion

Overall, it is a pleasant show with important messages. Although the Japanese American collaboration might not have been accepted by many, it still deployed all the emotions. It is a good investment with a proper runtime.
