Drama Digest

Six primary school friends get invited to a reunion party by a classmate no one remembers. When they start vibing on their memories, Kaoru (the one who organized the reunion) suggests playing a game. As everyone starts prepping for the game, an unexpected death brings chills to the group. They realize they are locked in a high-storied building with no mobile network. They question the intention behind the reunion invitation and start suspecting one another. What should have been a sweet reunion filled with fun turns into a survival game filled with love and betrayal.

The Feel-Good Part

The drama does not have any unnecessary plots. It has the perfect number of episodes for a short-binge watch. Shows in the thriller genre never fail to disappoint and Bokura ga Koroshita, Saiai no Kimi is no exception. Tsuyoshi Furukawa as Yuma is a show-stealer. His character is well written, and his acting is on point. The performances by Fumiya Takahashi, Yuno Ohara( another scene-stealer), and Suzuki Jin are incredible. The pace of the drama is good, and the actors have justified their characters.

The Disappointing Factor

The BGM of the show could have been better. The show has its flaws with plot holes and ambiguous storytelling. The ending especially is poorly explained. Ryubi Miyase was a promising character but got very little screen time and character development (Kaoru). The plot in itself is not gripping. There was a lot of room for script improvement, which could have brought out the story much more effectively.

In-Depth Analysis

The seven characters of our story meet for their primary school reunion almost after ten years. Kaoru invited the other six to a high-storied, secluded building in Tokyo. Rei and Hajime were best friends in school but lost touch after graduation. Rei is currently dating Rina. Rina also went to the same school and gave big sister vibes even during childhood. Asuka and Rina were good friends in school. Hiroto is another good friend of all of them, and they were all well-known in their class. Yuma is another classmate who is solitary and cold to others. Rei had a cheerful and friendly personality, while Hajime was calm and witty. Hiroto was short-tempered. Asuka needs attention and appreciation. None of them remember Kaoru, but he knows all about them (present and past). Kaoru was a secretary in school, but his presence was weak. When Rei voices this, Kaoru suggests playing a murder mystery-solving game to make them remember him. They all agree and follow his instructions. They realize Kaoru knows all their dirty secrets and is toying with them. When they try to corner him, they find out he died and are shocked. They try to get out of the building only to know all exits are locked, and there is no network. Rei and Hajime take the lead and try to calm their panic-stricken friends. Eventually, they start doubting the cause of Kaoru`s death and suspect each other. The dynamics start changing when their romantic feelings and dark secrets slowly get revealed. Another mystery death pushes them to try to get out of there alive as soon as possible. Some of them can`t believe the revelation of secrets and try to take sides. The ending is ambiguous and leaves the audience with multiple theories answering who is actually behind all this drama.

Star Power

The cast of the drama is limited. The plot restricts the story to a confined place with only seven characters. We see Fumiya Takahashi as Rei Kobayashi, Jin Suzuki as Gen Ozaki (Hajime), Hiroe Igeta as Rina Yoshimura, Yuno Ohara as Asuka Honda, Tokihide Wakabayashi as Daisho Wakaba (Hiroto), Tsuyoshi Furukawa as Yuma Kamei and Ryubi Miyase as Kaoru Nakamura.

Overall Opinion

The show fails to leave a long-lasting impression but is worth a one-time binge. Though the show is a thriller, it gives its own share of romantic and comedy scenes. Bokura ga Koroshita, Saiai no Kimi positively passes as one of the fantastic thriller Japanese dramas. With only six episodes, the show is enjoyable. The ambiguous ending and unanswered plot holes give the potential for a follow-up season. In short, Bokura ga Koroshita, Saiai no Kimi is a thriller worth the watch. The writing and acting balance somehow and make this drama binge-worthy.
