Drama Digest

This Chinese drama takes place in the Jixuan time period. The leading characters Meng Yu Er, Pei Pu he, and An Li get entangled in a high-end drama of romance and mystery. The basic premise of The Emperor’s Uncle Is Enough Season 1        deals with princess Meng Yuer murdering foes and the implications she deals after that. This season fundamentally tackles with orthodox rituals with lightless and humor. Each episode is no more than 5 minutes which is short and effective.

The Feel-Good Part

The characters are the highlight of this Chinese drama. They carry the scenes without spoiling the narratives. Meng Yuer played by Olive (Love actually 2017) brings in grace and entertainment whenever she is onscreen. The drama is mostly seen from her lens, so we see romantic entanglements and idealist scenes. This drama’s highlight is the fighting scenes which are brilliantly choreographed. Another great aspect is the male lead and parallel male lead played by James Zhan (Hidden marriage love 2021) and Blair Mo ( Wait in Beijing 2020) The story is heartfelt and sincere.

 The Disappointing Factor

The dialogues are the biggest drawback. If the plot is canvas, the dialogues are the colors. In this case, the colors that are the dialogues are faded and one tone. There is a stillness in most scenes, and the cinematography moves the plot forward instead of the conversations. There is a scene in episode three where the camera pans at the character and without any dialogue or exchange of words the story moves forward. This kind of storytelling is sometimes confusing.

In-Depth Analysis

The drama is a good example of the protagonist facing all the trials and tribulations for being a forward thinker. This show falls under the stereotype of letting the main characters get into silly misunderstandings as a way to create drama. This shows a bit of lazy writing.

There are good elements of duality, that is having the protagonist choose between responsibilities and love. James Zhan who plays Pei Pu he is shown to see a world through a black and white lens. Due to this, his judgment of right and wrong gets in way of his judgment. The relationship he shares with princess Meng Yuer often faces the axe due to this, but it adds a good character quirk.

Star Power

Meng Yu Er, Pei Pu he, and An Li played by Olive, James Zhan and Blair Mo respectfully have taken their roles very sincerely. They don’t distract the plot but smoothly sail with the story and add their charm.

Overall Opinion

A decent story with good actors and average dialogues attracts a young adult demographic. The cliffhangers at the end of each episode make viewers want for more. The duration is short, which makes it easy to watch. The drama captures the drama of an ancient era. This is an easy to watch romantic historical drama.
