Drama Digest

In-Depth Analysis
The play is a centennial commemoration of the party’s inception. A terrible drought engulfed Linxian in the summer and fall of 1959, with river ponds and reservoirs drying up, crops dying in wide regions, and people and animals in dire straits. A group of members of the Linxian County Party Committee, led by county party committee secretary Yang Gui, are resolved to end the condition of Linxian ancestors who lack water. After conducting extensive field research, the county party committee decided to construct the Red Flag Canal of the Zhangzhang into the Forest Project, reorganise Linxian County’s rivers and mountains, and eliminate the county’s long-standing water scarcity. Yang Guihe and a team from the county party committee led the people of Lin County through a series of natural calamities, overcoming pessimism and constructing the “Zhangzhang into the Forest Project” with tens of thousands of troops and battles. They arrived to the Taihang mountainside after a ten-year journey. Tianhe Red Flag Canal was constructed artificially.
Star Power
The main character Yu Zhen is a familiar face to the audience, but the other young actors, including Xu Guangyu, Kou Zhenhua, and Li Qinqin, are not. However, the young actors’ emotional, simple, and true performances will bring people to tears from time to time. The presence of an old opera bone bolstered the plot’s driving force and brought up memories of the drought for many viewers.
Overall Opinion
“Red Flag Canal” is still a wonderful play with a lot of positive energy and a distinct feeling of time.
