Drama Digest
This is a romance story which has three versions: Korean, Chinese, and Thai. This review is going to cover the Chinese version. It aired in August 2020. It is a story about a rich guy and a tone-deaf woman who are forced to live together under certain circumstances and how they fall in love with each other during the process.
The Feel-Good Factor
Firstly, it’s name is very eye-catching and poetic–Midsummer is full of love. The original soundtracks and cinematography are strong components of the series. The series succeeded in portraying a lot of sweet moments between both leads. The actor Timmy Xu is said to have played a huge part in the series’s success as he has a vast fan base and immaculate acting skills that consist of micro-expressions that are hard to find.
The Disappointing Factor
The story is not very different from what we normally see, but it’s a sweet one. You’ll find it even better if you’re a fan of either of the main leads. There are a few illogical things that are difficult to watch, and some of the never-recovering plot holes.
In-Depth Analysis
Timmy Xu as Ze YI, the male lead, is a pop superstar who is preoccupied with his career and lacks support from his father.The female lead Yang Chao Yeu, as Luo Tian Ran, is a tone-deaf person who dreams of breaking into the music world with her song writing skills. She has no family and lives in a house with her friend Xiaoqin, who is immoral and unjust. Xiaoqin was in search of good money as her family was loaded with a lot of debts and she wanted to help them. So she plays a wicked trick on her friend Tianran by getting her wastefully drunk and somehow selling Tianran’s father’s house (who has been dead for some time) to a pop idol, Ze Yi. When Tianran learns about this, she’s aghasted. She doesn’t understand what to do next, but she forgives Xiaoqin soon after. As a solution to this, she starts living with the man to whom the house has been sold to, the pop idol–Ze Yi. Both of them have a lot of differences between them; they argue all the time, but it’s cute to watch. A few days later, Ze Yi’s manager threw him a party, and the party consisted of Ze Yi’s parents as well as a few different people, such as a doctor named Yun Shu, who was a protege of Ze Yi’s father. Ze Yi’s father had the intention of marrying Ze Yi to his business partner’s daughter, Meng Meng, but Ze Yi wasn’t interested in her, so he made a shocking announcement: that Tianran is his fiancé and that they’re going to get married soon. Everybody is dismayed, including Tianran, but they soon get married on a contractual basis. Soon, the family of Ze Yi accepts Tianran wholeheartedly as their daughter-in-law, but there were still no feelings between Ze Yi and Tianran. They went on like this for a few days, arguing sometimes, but all was okay until the protege, Yun Shu, started trying to get close to Tianran. Both of them started to spend time together, but Tianran didn’t have romantic feelings for Yun Shu, even though he did. Tiffany, Ze yi’s manager, on the other hand, had been in love with him for a long time and wanted to expose the truth about Ze yi and Tianran’s fake marriage. After knowing about the people in each other’s lives, they start getting jealous and slowly realise that they actually love nobody but each other. Soon, the fake contract marriage is exposed in front of everyone, which upsets everyone, but Ze Yi and Tianran try to convince everyone that they are not getting divorced and that their marriage is not meaningless.They both confirm their feelings for each other and marry for real in a matter of days, and it’s a happily ever after.
Star Power
Timmy Xu was definitely the star of the show because of his astounding acting and gorgeous looks. But another character that can low-key steal your heart is Yun Shu. He was a very helpful, caring, understanding, and supportive friend to Tianran during her difficult times, despite Ze Yi’s mistaken belief that he was in a romantic relationship with her.
Overall Opinion
The series is a lot cliché, with multiple third wheels appearing between the main couple, but alas, it all ends well. It’s overall a series you can rely on for sweet feelings if you have a busy schedule.
