Drama Digest

Tao Xiao Ting and Tao Xiao Di are sisters who come to the city to make better lives. Xiao Ting is perseverant and hard-working, while her elder sister, Xiao Di, believes in taking the easy way up. Xiao Di is materialistic, and she believes that getting plastic surgery to essentially change the way she looks and beautify herself would be enough to give her the perfect life. Changing her name to Tao Fai Er, she eyes the Ounuo group’s CEO. On the other side, Xiao Ting works incredibly hard and develops a chaotic camaraderie with Lian Sheng, a business sensation. The story follows their dynamic evolving from distrustful to something more beautiful and tender.

The Feel-Good Part

This drama is entertaining to watch and the dynamic between Lian and Xiao Ting is delightful. Their relationship evolves realistically, and their characterisation is done well. They do not seem like exaggerated portrayals of certain character tropes. Janice Wu delivers a commendable performance, and so does Edward Zhang. The soundtrack is also admirable because it matches the moods in the episodes and alleviates the story significantly.

The Disappointing Factor

The romance between the second leads is quite questionable, and the development in their relationship seems incomplete enough to endanger the thought that the writer had dropped them towards the end. There are a few c-drama-typical stints and roundabout actions that get annoying. Tao Fai Er’s arc had more potential and was not appropriately explored, and she was reduced to a materialistic vamp of sorts.

In-Depth Analysis

This show is a good watch. It has decent acting from the leads, and their relationship possesses a maturity rare in dramas. They have non-verbal cues between them, and their camaraderie develops beautifully. There is poor character development for some other characters, and the key impediment is the questionable development of the second couple’s relationship.

Star Power

Janice Wu alone forms one of the significant reasons for watching this drama, and Edward Zhang’s performance is commendable too.

Overall Opinion

This show falls into the guilty pleasure categories. Overall, it is not too bad a watch if you have time.
