Article: 10 Of The Most Supportive Parents In Thai BL Dramas

When the world is hell-bent on being cruel just based on your sexual orientation, your home, at least, should be a safe place for you. Supportive parents will educate themselves about LGBTQ+ issues, learn to respect differences, and they will actively challenge societal prejudices. A supportive and open-minded environment helps a queer person embrace their authentic self and gives them a sense of belonging in a world that may not always be accepting. So, here are 10 of the most supportive parents in Thai BL dramas:

1. Pete’s Mother In Love By Chance (2018)

Love by Chance is a 2018 Thai BL drama that aired on GMM 25 and Line TV. This is the story of Pete, a sweet and meek university student. He was forced to come out to his mother when someone sent her a video of him with a man. But the next scene didn’t turn out as one might expect; it was probably the most beautiful scene of this drama. When he asks her not to hate him for liking men, her reply brings tears to the viewers' eyes: “No matter whom you love, any gender, you’re always my child that I love. I will love you and always be here for you”.

2. Tinn’s Parents In My School President (2022)

My School President is a 2023 Thai BL drama that aired on GMM 25. My School President is pretty simple in plot, just your cliché sort of enemies-to-lovers story. But what made this drama so special was the main character’s relationship with their parents. When Tinn’s mom finds out that her son is gay, she isn’t mad at him; she is afraid of how the world might see and treat him. His dad explains to her that if the world is cruel to their child, they have to be as kind as possible. They have to make their home the safest and happiest place they can be at. And they do well on their promise.

3. Gun’s Mother In My School President (2022)

Like Tinn’s parents, the other main character, Gun’s mother, also needs to be mentioned. Gun’s mother always knew and supported her son. She saw Gun interact with Tinn and realised right away, even bringing them back to each other when they had a misunderstanding. She is the parent every queer kid deserves, for with someone like her, they will learn to love who they are without any reservations and be confident and strong if the world tries to tear them down.

4. Gaipa’s Mother In Moonlight Chicken (2023)

Moonlight Chicken is a 2023 Thai BL that aired on GMM 25. This is the story of a gay man who owns a chicken diner. Gaipa and his mother are side characters in this series, but their impact and message are very important. Gaipa is gay too, and his mother was his lifelong ally. She even advises him on getting a man and tells him not to regret anything; she is his biggest supporter. She also tells him to get a boyfriend for her sake.

5. Akk’s Parents In The Eclipse (2022)

The Eclipse is a 2022 Thai BL drama that aired on GMM 25. This BL drama is filled with clever symbolism and political themes that explore the complicated world of power, privilege and oppression of the oppressed, in this case, the queer population. But this is also a drama with caring friends and even more caring parents. When the main character, Akk, comes out to his parents, his dad tells him – “I would never regret it (Akk being gay). I only care for you. You must have been bearing it for so long, and you finally have the courage to let it out. Well done, son.”

6. Tharn’s Parents In Tharntype: The Series (2019)

TharnType: The Series is a Thai BL drama that aired on GMM One. The relationship of the main characters in this drama is a complicated enemies to lovers one, but their relationship with their parents isn’t. When the main character, Tharn, comes out to his parents, they accept him without hesitation and tell him that he can bring his boyfriend home to celebrate his birthday. True to their words, when Tharn does bring his boyfriend, Type, home, they are very welcoming, joke around with him, and even ask him if Tharn makes him uncomfortable.

7. Pharm’s Mother In Until We Meet Again (2019)

Until We Meet Again is a 2019 BL drama that aired on Line TV. This is a story of star-crossed lovers and rebirth and also present generations correcting the wrongs of the previous generations, which also includes the parents of the main characters. One of the main characters, Pharm’s mother, is one such example. She is a wonderful woman, a single mother raising two kids on her own. When Pharm comes out to her, she says – “Why won’t I be okay if you’re going to love someone? Whoever you love is up to you.”

8. King’s Parents In Friend (2023)

Bed Friend is a 2023 Thai BL that aired on GMM One. This drama shows you two types of parents in this world and their differences very clearly. While the main character, Uea’s biological mother, is abusive and homophobic and ignores his pleas for help when his stepfather sexually assaults him, the other main character, King’s parents, show you what real parenting looks like. When he comes out to them, they are concerned for him but accept him. Later, they also accept Uea, his boyfriend, and King’s mom asks Uea to call her mom too!

9. Nuer’s Parents In Grey Rainbow (2016)

This is the story of two best friends that discover new feelings for each other; this drama also showcases the real coming out experience and how the parents play an important role in it. When Nuer comes out to his parents, they are shocked and angry at first. But later, their love for their son overpowered everything else, and they accepted him. His mother also turned into his biggest supporter.

10. Kao’s Mother In Dark Blue Kiss (2019)

Dark Blue Kiss is a 2019 Thai BL that aired on GMM 25. This is a continuation of ‘Kiss Me Again’ and focuses mainly on Pete and Kao’s story, and it’s the latter’s mother we will talk about. In the whole drama, her character was the best. It becomes apparent when you watch it that Kao’s mom knew all along; she just didn’t push or corner him and waited for him to tell her on his own terms. And when he comes out to her, she accepts him without hesitation or weird comments. She goes even a step further by apologising to him for making him afraid and hiding it.
