Anime and some Japanese movies have long been regarded as one of Japan's most popular forms of entertainment, with Hayao Miyazaki's films (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke) in the fore. Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, The Tale of Princess Kaguya), Makoto Shinkai (Your Name, Weathering With You), Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue), and Mamoru Hosada are some of the most well-known animation directors (Mirai). So, here's a rundown of all the Japanese films that tanked at the box office. Please keep in mind that box office standards vary from country to country.

1. Kimi No Na Wa - 41.4 Billion Yen

Your Name (Japanese: Kimi no Na Wa.) is a 2016 Japanese animated love fantasy film released by Toho and produced by CoMix Wave Films. It features a high school student in Tokyo and a high school girl in the Japanese countryside who begin to exchange bodies unexpectedly and strangely. Makoto Shinkai wrote and directed the film, which was commissioned in 2014. It stars Ryunosuke Kamiki and Mone Kamishiraishi in the lead roles, with animation directed by Masashi Ando, character design by Masayoshi Tanaka, and an orchestral score and soundtrack composed by Radwimps. A month before the film's release, Shinkai's light novel of the same name was published.

 

2. Spirited Away - 30.4 Billion Yen

Spirited Away is a 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, produced by Toho, Nippon Television Network, Dentsu, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Tohokushinsha Film, and Mitsubishi, and distributed by Toho. Spirited Away depicts the narrative of Chihiro Ogino, a ten-year-old girl who discovers the world of Kami while moving to a new neighborhood (spirits of Japanese Shinto folklore). After the witch Yubaba (Natsuki) turns her parents into pigs, Chihiro gets a job working at Yubaba's bathhouse to discover a method to free herself and her parents and return to the human world.

Sofia, an 18-year-old girl, works in her father's headgear shop. On one of her occasional visits to the city, she encounters Hauru, a beguiling but suspicious character. A witch places a curse on Sofia that causes her to turn 90 years old by mistaking their love. Sofia, desperate, flees and stumbles into the Animated Castle of Hauru. She manages to get employed to provide domestic chores on the spot while concealing her identity, and she becomes involved with the other residents of the castle.

 

4. Princess Mononoke - 19.3 Billion Yen

When a strange monster attacks the town of Ashitaka, the valiant prince chooses to confront him. He fights the animal and kills it, but not before his arm is damaged and poisoned by a curse. Unless he seeks treatment in the forbidden forest, he will corrode with hatred until he becomes a demon like the other and dies. This is the start of Ashitaka's trip, which will take him through amazing animals, cursed princesses, and natural wonders. The prince will also encounter the men who wish to destroy the forest and little San, also known as Princess Mononoke.
