Because the people who are part of this industry or work know that it is way darker than it appears and celebrities have to face its adverse effects from time to time. And I am not referring to any single country because the entertainment industry of every country has its negativity. With the increasing importance of mental well-being, now celebrities are also coming forward and sharing their stories. So, here is a list of some Chinese celebrities who suffered from mental health issues either because of personal reasons or professional reasons:

1. Sammi Cheng

She was one of the biggest Pop icons in the 1990s and 2000s. She was born in 1972 and during an interview in 2013, while she was promoting her movie, she opened up about her struggles with mental health, which she faced for three years beginning from 2005. She said that before that, she was very negative, but after that period, she has gained a more optimistic perspective.

 

2. Fiona Sit

She entered the music industry at the young age of 18 and got some small screen references. She said that she suffered from some severe depression in 2008 and also had suicidal thoughts. She then went to rehabilitation for her treatment which helped her in changing her perspective towards life.

 

3. Shawn Yue

He is a model, actor and singer by profession. He faced the problem of Panic Disorder and first faced it while travelling in a flight and was tranquillized by a foreign doctor so that the journey could be completed. He is still suffering from this problem but is getting proper treatment, and has assured his fans that he will be cured soon.

 

4. Louis Cheung

He is a famous TV actor and married a famous TV actress in 2007, both of them rose to fame together, but soon he started receiving hate from his wife’s fans as she was earning more than him. In a talk show, he revealed that he went into depression for the same reason but the support of his wife and proper treatment helped him overcome that problematic phase.

 

5. Kara Wai

Next on our list comes Kara Hui, who was at the peak of her career during the 1970s and 1980 and has appeared on a lot of shows and movies. She revealed that she faced depression after receiving a lot of negative coverage, due to which she used to cry daily and even made a suicide attempt. By undergoing proper treatment, she was able to cure this problem.

 

6. Lesley Chiang

She is a trendy singer, actor and songwriter born in 1986. She went into depression after the end of her relationship and also tried to commit suicide thrice. But then she went to therapy, started journaling, exercising and meditating, which helped her overcome that phase. Now she is working as an activist and trying to raise awareness about the importance of mental health.

 

7. Kimi Qiao Renliang

He was a singer and actor with a promising career. He worked in a lot of popular movies. He suffered from depression for a long time and when he was just 28 years old, he took his life because of depression which left the world in shock. He committed suicide in the year 2016.

 

8. Leslie Cheung

He was an actor, director and pop star. During his career of 26 years, he worked in a lot of movies and films. But the fans were left devasted on the day the news of his suicide came out. He even left a suicide note which had the mention of depression.

 

9. Stephen Chow

He is an actor, producer and director by profession and is considered a perfectionist in this field. He was born in 1962 and was very shy when he was young. Some of his co-workers say that he has temper issues and he has also admitted that there was a period when he was struggling with his mental health.

 

10. Cui Yongyuan

He is the host of a very popular talk show called ‘Tell It Like It Is’ on CCTV. He is very popular among the audience. During an interview, he admitted that he suffered from severe insomnia and depression and needed 24-hour surveillance not to harm himself. But he was able to overcome the situation by undergoing proper treatment and care.
