Drama Digest

Tajimi is a city renowned for its Mino ware ceramics and happens to be the hometown of Himeno Toyokawa’s mother. After her mother died suddenly at the age of four, her legacy continued to live on as she was considered a pottery legend. Most of her work is displayed in the Toyokawas’ new restaurant in Tajimi. Himeno moved back from Tokyo City due to her father’s bankruptcy. She takes her mother’s mugs to school as an attempt to make friends, which works in her favour as she is later introduced to the president of the pottery club. The club members are ecstatic to have her in the group after hearing about her mother’s contribution to the art form. The show is about her discovering the passion she has for the art form as well as an attempt to connect with her mother’s creative endeavours.

The Feel-Good Part

The show is quite light-hearted and has a joyous tone to it. It is extremely easy to watch as there aren’t twists and turns in the show. The relationships between the characters are extremely wholesome and entertaining to watch, which gives the audience a feel-good viewing experience. The coming of age journey of the protagonist takes centre stage with a strong backdrop of art. The incorporation of pottery in the story is done well as it provides insight about the art form as well as gives the show a unique touch.

The Disappointing Factor

There isn’t much of a plot throughout the show, which can get boring quite quickly. The series also comes off as monotone as there aren’t many points of conflict that are strong so there’s not too much to look forward to. There are many scenes and episodes that often feel pointless as it neither furthers the plot nor aids character development. This can get pretty frustrating to watch as there are too many filler scenes when there is already very little that is happening in actuality. The characters don’t feel very well-written as there is no proper connection that is created between the characters and the audience. The animation style is quite simplistic and nothing special, which is disappointing as it is after all, a show about art. The music is not used to its optimum potential, which may make the anime series come off as lack-lustre.

In-Depth Analysis

The series is quite a delight to watch for the most part especially for people who are looking for something simple to watch. Many of the show’s criticisms are not unique to the show as it is usually the way slice of life anime shows are. It caters to the fans of this genre very well as it is wholesome and easy to watch. It is not ground-breaking by any means but it is well executed.

Star Power

All the performances were great, the characters felt energetic, interesting and distinct from one another.

Overall Opinion

Yaku Nara Mug Cup mo is a great series for fans of the slice of life genre. People who enjoy action packed anime might get bored watching this. The show makes for an easy and comforting watch.
