Anime Digest

This is a Japanese anime series that tells the story of some mysterious creatures similar to animals getting revealed to the world.

The Feel-Good Part

The show has a beautiful retro physical tone to it meaning the colors used in it resonate the vibes of a retro anime. The action scenes paired with excellent animation stand out. It has a great story as well as great storytelling.

The Disappointing Factor

One of the factors that disappointed the viewers was the show’s length. It’s only a 12-episode anime series which is unusually less for an anime. It felt like the story was crumbled to fit into twelve episodes. Also, there was no possibility of a season two which disappointed the viewers furthermore.

In-Depth Analysis

The series is based upon the fact that there’s a world where normal humans exist along with some half-human creatures which also resemble animals. The city they reside in is known as the ‘Anima City’. They are the kind of creatures they are due to a trait found in their DNA. This trait is called as ‘beast factor.’ These creatures are of various types and have different names. The series begins and centers around the female protagonist ‘Michiru Kagemori,’ who accidentally transforms into a beast. This happens due to an unfortunate incident at the hospital she was admitted in, where a beastman’s blood is injected into her body. The type of beastman Michiru changed into was known as ‘Tanuki’. She gets into all this mess while trying to find her best friend Nazuna Hiwatashi, who was abducted. Following this incident, she runs off to Anima city to seek help and shelter. There she ends up meeting the male protagonist of the story, Shirou Ogami. He works for the mayor of the city. He decides to help Michiru and both of them start investigating the mysterious transformation of humans into beastmen. Soon, Michiru learns that Shirou is a legendary character as he was the only survivor of his clan ‘Nirvasyl’. He had dedicated his life to protecting those of his kind from the humans as it had caused him personal loss as well. After years of fighting for his rights and seeking justice for his clan, he learns that it was all a misunderstanding. A pharmaceutical doctor, owner of Sylvasta pharmaceuticals explains to him that it was not the humans but a disease called the ‘Nirvasyl syndrome’ which caused the people of his clan to kill one another. In the end, Shirou and Michiru find the cure to the Nirvasyl syndrome and also solve all the mysteries/unsolved cases lagging behind it.

Star Power

The show’s main lead and focus, Michiru really stood out from the crowd due to how well her character was written. Her unexpected transformation from a human to a half beast and her discovery of the new world and creatures plus her adventures and rescues along with Shirou makes her an all-round character.

Overall Opinion

The show is a combination of themes like racism, discrimination, hatred, resentment, redemption, forgiveness, etc. It intelligently represents these themes. Every aspect of the story is pretty accessible to all sorts of audiences.
