Anime Digest

Bishounen Tanteidan is a Japanese anime based on a novel, the alternative title of Bishounen Tanteidan is Pretty Boy Detective Club. The anime’s plotline revolves around a second-year middle school student Mayumi Dojima on her 14th birthday, promises her parents to give up on being an astronaut if she fails to find a star she saw ten years ago. To her aid, she finds a mysterious club at her school offering to help her search for the star, though the club is unofficial and secretive, named as Pretty Boy Detective Club. The club consists of five boys who eventually get closely acquainted with Mayumi Dojima, together, these bunch of teenagers embarks on a truly incredible adventures. However, Mayumi Dojima, too, has her own set of extraordinary abilities, which is her eyesight, which enables her to see even the farthest and tiniest details.

The Feel-Good Part

The anime would be liked by fans of the mystery genre as the plotline mainly involves the detective theme. The anime is fun to watch and has its fair share of comedy and humor. The art and the animation are good, especially the attention to detail even in the background is praise-worthy.

The Disappointing Factor

There are a lot of disappointing factors in this anime. Starting with the characters, apart from the character of Mayumi, none of the characters have depth and are pretty poorly written. Even though the characters are teenagers, they rarely justify their age in the entire series, feel more mature aged than they are. The storyline was pretty average and nothing extra-ordinary, and some might even find it boring considering that there was no thrilling scene that would grip the audience.

In-Depth Analysis

Bishounen Tanteidan is based on a novel series named Bishonen Series written by Nisio Isin. If you have already read the novel, you will get a gist of what the anime series offers. The anime features a reverse harem theme, with some nicely designed characters. As already mentioned before, the most vital point of this anime is its animation and art. The storyline is nothing extraordinary and gets boring at some point due to the lack of strong characters. The characters have some bizarre logic and antics written for them by the writers, which seems pretty off. As the anime falls under the mystery genre, the mystery in the plotline is not bad but not very good either. The mysteries surrounding the anime are not very intelligent and seem only a prop for the characters.

Star Performance

Mayumi Doujima is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto, Sousaku Yubiwa by Gen Satou, Michiru Fukuroi by Toshiki Masuda, Manabu Soutouin by Ayumu Murase, and Nagahiro Sakiguchi by Taito Ban. The supporting voice actors include Hiroki Nanami, Chika Anzai, Akira Ishida, and many more.

Overall Opinion

The anime, though, seems quite unrealistic at many points, it is pretty enjoyable, fun to watch. Though not many, the little humor the anime offers is quite pleasant. There are a lot of philosophical dialogue exchanges which many might like. Overall, Bishounen Tanteidan is apt for one-time watch and nothing more than that.
