Drama Digest

The story takes place in the town of Itaewon on the night of Halloween. A murder occurs in a bar, and hence, the story unfolds.

The Feel-Good Part

As a whole, Lim Hwa Young carried the whole show. She showed an outstanding balance between weak, crazy, and outright cold-blooded murderers. Besides that, the camera work and the editing were terrific; it had the stereotypical noir, artsy vibes. The story unfolds in several layers and through many twists, even though it is shot in a single location.

The Disappointing Part

The film had a lot of disappointing factors. Some critics called it a silly Halloween movie. It seems like an experimental movie regarding both the characters and the storyline. The fights of the bad guys turning against each other were repetitive. The randomness of the plot makes it hard to unravel its meaning.

In-Depth Analysis

It was the night of Halloween, in a bar in Itaewon. The bartender, also the owner, dressed as Count Dracula, is about to close shop for the night. Before that, a blonde woman comes and asks for one last drink, tequila. The bartender agrees only for half an hour as he finishes closing. He tries to flirt obnoxiously but is turned down by the girl. A few moments later, a man enters asking for help for his brother, whom he carries on his back. The two brothers are robbers, and the younger one kills the bartender. The young brother throws a fit, but the older, Kang-tae, remains calm and decides to call for help. After that, Sen, an obese man appears. He soon learns what is going on and does not want to be involved in the case. Kang-tae blackmails him and proposes a tempting offer. Sen invites another man named Baek-gu, one who has much expertise in getting rid of a body. The revelation made by the girl changes everything, and after a while, the police show up.

Star Power

“Fanfare” highlights Lee Don-Ku’s directorial abilities in the best way. It shows that the woman character is not just a damsel-in-distress but the calmest and most cunning among the characters. Her composure can be described as surrealistic. Lim Hwa-young being the star of the show, delivers a great performance. The rest of the cast is also impressive. Furthermore, cinematographer Kim Sang-il does a excellent job in the presentation of the space in a claustrophobic fashion. Kim Cheol-Hwan’s music also adds to the environment.

Overall Opinion

Korean crime films are said to have an overwhelming plethora. Although not a great plot, it is exciting to watch the story unfold in its way.
