Movie Digest

Suicide Forest Village (樹海村) is a Japanese-origin film that circles around traditional Japanese folklore and horror genres with a touch of investigation scenarios. The movie hit the theater screens on the 5th of February, 2021. The story revolves around the Aokigahara forest on Mount Fuji, where people dare to explore the woods, a place from which no one has returned before.

The Feel-Good Part

It is a delight for fans who crave a little bit of horror with loads of thrillers on the side. Suicide Forest Village comes under a franchise with Howling Village as its prequel and Ushikuvi Mura as its sequel. The dark setting of the Suicide Forest Village fits well with the overall eerie vibes of the script. Moreover, the sound effects were what essentially surprised the fans the most, seeming pleasing to the ears.

The Disappointing Factor

The long-running time of Suicide Forest Village disappoints the viewers the most as the same jumpscares keep on repeating. The scene feels like a loophole with nothing different to add to the plot development. Even towards the end, there’s no climactic resolution duly provided to the audience.

In-Depth Analysis

Completed under the skillful direction of Shimizu Takashi and written for the screen by Hosaka Daisuke, the plot opens with the retelling of an evil spirit residing in the forest. It all began when Akina, who works as a YouTuber, live-streamed her trip to the forest. However, with evil spirits at bay, things do not go as planned, resulting in her death. Fascinated with the mysterious lore of the Aokigahara forest on Mount Fuji, people take a trip to put these superstitions to rest.
