Drama Digest

The story revolves around an ordinary innkeeper, Ximen Debao. To draw in business, he asks his brother, Tu Hao, and his companions to act like burglars and ransack passers-by so that he can step into those situations and help them passers-by. Later, he would direct them towards his inn and thus have more customers. When the governor learns about a secret treasure map hidden in the inn, he lures Debao into the murder of his son. The governor kills Debao’s son by poisoning him and thus seeks revenge. Debao joins the Shaolin temple to train in martial arts.

The Feel Good Part

The best thing about the film is its action sequences. The sequences are well executed and shot, which is very thrilling to watch. Also, the aesthetics of shooting sets/locations go very well with the theme and the film’s ambiance.

The Disappointing Factor

The film’s plot feels very generic as multiple Chinese films have similar stories. Keeping that in mind, the film is not particularly unique, but it is compensated for by the action sequences on offer.

In-Depth Analysis

The story tells us how the loss of a loved one can change people drastically. Anger and hatred are strong feelings alongside greed. The story tries to take a moral stand on the events through the main character. Hebao, who seeks revenge, eventually goes through a change of mind to some extent when he discovers the secret relationship between the temple and his family.

Star Power

Wang Bao Qiang in the role of the main character does a versatile job. In particular, the action sequences that he performs are commendable. The supporting actors also do a great job of offering comic relief as well as meaning to the narrative. It is not a one-person show, so with the assistance of supporting actors, the dynamics of the film are maintained.

Overall Opinion

It is a good film with good action sequences and a simple story. It offers you all the elements one might need for laid-back entertainment. If you are a fan of Chinese martial arts and the narratives around Shaolin temples, this film is a good fit for your preferences.
