Li Yunxiang is a bike-loving racing renegade who breaks into factories at night to distribute free water to Donghai City residents. His noble efforts have drawn the attention of the Dragon Clan, who wants to destroy him and his family. Yunxiang, marked for death by the Clan, discovers that he is the reincarnation of a great deity: Nezha. He must come to terms with his new talents while under the guidance of a new mentor, all while working to preserve his city and people from the Dragon Clan’s wicked activities.

The basis of the film is the character of Nezha from the Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods. It has a modern spin on the old classic legend. There’s a satisfying dance between good and evil, themes of identity and fate, and lots to learn about the conflict between groups. There are stunning fight scenes, landscapes, and animation effects found throughout the movie. The animation makes the film delightful to watch. The characters were drawn to perfection as if they were alive. The world around those characters is elegant and wonderfully crafted, with everything from gleaming skyscrapers to mythological beasties to luminous avatars. It is astonishingly deep and impactful for a two-hour action movie and even unexpectedly emotional.

The character designs are artistically beautiful, particularly Nezha’s, who is brimming with power and yearning for a way to realize his full potential.
