Drama Digest

My People, My Homeland is an anthology film which is made up of five stories. All these stories are tied together with the thread of patriotism. All the stories take place in different parts of rural and urban China. The movie explores different communities of the country through the lives of various characters. The first of the five stories, ‘Beijing Good People’ deals with the spirit of helpfulness among the community members by shedding light on the health insurance system in China. The second story gives the audience a deeper look into the interior villages of china while introducing sci-fi elements. The third story in the series revolves around a school teacher Lao Fan who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. the story beautifully showcases how a bunch of students come together to help him recover his memory. The fourth story is ‘The Way Home’ which encompasses the journey of two old friends back in their hometown. The last story of the anthology is about a man named Ma Liang who chooses to return to his hometown and contribute to its development after completing his studies in Russia.

The Feel-Good Part

The stories in the anthology portray beautiful emotions of patriotism, nostalgia and humanity. It keeps the audience engaged by narrating a tale that involves common men and women of China. The stories are down to earth and hence feel relatable to the viewers. The idea of patriotism is not delivered by some fancy tools that deal with the hard power of the country. Instead, it talks about the common folks living regular lives and how the spirit of Chinese culture lives through them. The stories talk about how these people come together as a society and fulfil their duties.

The Disappointing Factor

The movie is called out for being communist party propaganda by many. Its feel-good nature and the glorification of the small town and rural lives of China can be taken as a political approach by many and make the other elements of the story seem redundant.

In-Depth Analysis

The movie is shot as beautifully as the stories are created. Viewers are presented with a wonderful journey that allows them to see a China that is not covered by the mainstream media. It not only creates a sense of familiarity with the common lives in China but also helps one live through the emotional ups and downs of the common people.

Star Power

The movie casts many of the celebrated faces of the Chinese film industry. All the actors have done a great job with the script.

Overall Opinion

It is a feel-good movie that delivers what it promises. All five stories are a window into unseen China that is built by the common people of the country. It is a good watch for all ages which can provide a good fun time to the viewers.
