Drama Digest

True Beauty is a romantic comedy set in high school about a girl named Lim Ju Gyeong. Because of her appearance, she was often bullied. Fortunately, she had to change schools due to her family’s difficulties. She decides to learn how to apply makeup and enrols at a new school where she is revered and treated as a goddess. Lee Suho is the attractive male lead who is a tsundere, and he has seen her without her makeup before she came here. They meet, share their secrets, and quickly fall in love with one another. Han Seojun, the show’s second male star, is a charming and attractive character.

The Feel-Good Part

True Beauty was an enjoyable series to watch. It has just the right amount of comedy and amusing moments for high school students and their families. While both the female and male leads were central characters, Han Seojun was the most well-written. It was entertaining to watch him strike a balance of humour and tenderness for Ju Gyeong. The main family members, particularly Ju Gyeong’s brother, Lim Juyoung, were entertaining to watch.

The Disappointing Factor

While they did change Ju Gyeong’s appearance, this only demonstrated that you have to look a certain way to meet society’s standards and that you must continue to live that way if you want to be accepted. The conventional love triangle appeared to be tedious. Even though the second female lead is a strong and independent woman, depicting women as petty over men appears to be a tired formula. It simply appeared to be a clash of personalities.

In-Depth Analysis

Most of the story does revolve around Ju Gyeong and Suho’s relationship, it also shows the flaws of parenting. Ju Gyeong’s mother was in the dark regarding her bullying and kept criticizing her for spending money on makeup products. However she later learns about it and apologizes for her mistake and defends her daughter. The supporting characters were of great strength to the show. Seojun and his squad always managed to steal the spotlight. Ju Gyeong and Soojin’s friendship was also interesting to watch.

Star Power

Moon Ga Young (Lim Joo Gyeong), Cha Eun Woo (Lee Su Ho), Hwang In Youp (Han Seo Jun) and Park Yoo Na (Kang Soo Jin)

Overall Opinion

Overall the drama is fun to watch as a stress buster.
