Drama Digest

“Gannibal” is a 2022 Japanese horror and psychological drama. It is based on a manga of the same name written and illustrated by Masaaki Ninomiya. It is a Seinen story, which signifies violence and is generally made into live-action than an anime adaptation. The story revolves around police officer Agawa Daigo who is posted to a remote village. Although the village has a beautiful scenic view, it holds a deep secret. The village has a community of cannibals that eat people. While lurking around the village every day, Daigo uncovers a horrifying truth.

The Feel-Good Part

This horror movie is an absolute hit with fantastic production and storyline. This is an ideal suspense-driven psychological thriller drama. It has incredible cinematography and a perfect costume display that is natural. The festival and folk setting set it apart from most Japanese shows. The pacing of the story is excellent as it slowly unveils. It is faithful to its source and accurately adapts the manga. The visuals were mesmerizing that gave a calm village mountain vibe, but also maintained to show the darkness that existed within it. The filmmakers made it seem natural. Gannibal is a fantastic show that dives deep into the darkness within human beings without supernatural affairs.

The Disappointing Factor

The most disappointing factor about the show is the unfinished ending. The show makers left it probably to make a sequel but it was not very pleasant to many viewers as it ended at a cliffhanger. Some visual effects in the show felt unfinished. There were many plot holes and unnecessary characters.

In-Depth Analysis

After a significant incident, Daigo Agawa, a police officer, was posted to a remote village in the countryside. He takes his wife and daughter to live in the mountain village of Kuge. It seemed like a perfect recovery after the incident, even though the previous office posted there had mysteriously disappeared. One day a dead boy of an old lady was seen in the mountain. The Goto family staying there explained it as a bear attack, but Daigo had noticed a human bite mark. Soon after, the horrifying truth behind the village comes out. It is full of cannibals.

Star Power

The screenwriter of the show Oe Takamasa is one of the best, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2021 for previous works. Yagira Yuyu, who played Agawa Daigo, delivered an outstanding performance. He is a perfect fit for the protagonist of the story. He is best known for his role in his previous work, “Nobody knows,” for which he was the youngest actor to receive the best actor award at Cannes. Riho Yoshida, as Yuki Awaga, portrays the character with elegance. She performed the distant nature of Yuki.

Overall Opinion

It is a superb psychological mystery thriller drama that will not disappoint you. Unlike existing Japanese dramas, the production value, and making of the show are top notches which will give you the utmost satisfaction in watching a horror thriller. The acting and the casts are excellent. The story is grounded in reality to an excellent extent as it represents cannibalism which existed in the past, and even now, but is not spoken about enough. This show exemplifies an excellent Japanese drama with high-quality products that would not disappoint you. With an unfinished ending, there is a sequel approaching with season 2.
