Drama Digest

This Chinese drama features the main female protagonist as the lead detective of a team. The series is divided into two parts, each dedicated to one case each. A single part consists of 12 episodes. She, along with her young male colleague, are hunting after a mysterious serial killer who is haunting their city. This killer disguises himself as a driver and kills people before they even know it. This drama tries to introduce a bit of western culture into its story by using various western storyline aspects. The show starts off with a pilot episode which ends on a cliffhanger, leaving the viewers stranded in the middle of suspense.

The Feel-Good Part

This series has incorporated a lot of westernization, thus burying many stereotypes that flow around Chinese society. It did a pretty good job for low-cost production. The message of women’s empowerment flows through the depiction of a powerful and independent female protagonist. It is said to be one of the most underrated Chinese suspense dramas by most of viewers. The story seems simple and uninteresting at the beginning but later goes through a lot of twists and turns. All the side characters have reasonable background stories.

The Disappointing Factor

There was nothing particularly disappointing about this show but many viewers can be of the opinion that there was nothing quite impressive either.

In-Depth Analysis

This series is one of those dramas that contribute towards the revolution of Chinese dramas. This drama is actually based partially on a true story. It portrays the main lead, a female named Lin Yu Hong, who is the lead detective of her team. The story takes place in a town called ‘Xinan.’ Yuhong along with her team, is busy solving everyday cases as usual. Recently, some strange cases have been happening around the city. In order to solve these cases, Yuhong takes a male subordinate under her hand. This subordinate is named ‘Zhao Wei.’ Both of them agree on solving the mysterious cases of the city together. Out of all the cases, two cases are the strangest. One of these cases involves a late-night ride of a customer in a vehicle hailed from an online app. The technique this serial killer was using was to disguise himself as a driver and then mysteriously makes his victims disappear. This case was as complicated as it was because there was no clue in hand to begin with. But slowly with time, the two leading detectives find clues one by one. Lots of mysterious angles are discovered while investigating this case. All this takes place on the pilot episode of the series. This episode ends in a Cliff hanger, and the rest of the story is continued in the main series. Both the detectives, along with their team and the police, are passionate and intricately look forward to solving various cases.

Star Power

The female lead herself was the focal point of the show given the fact that she plays the lead detective role of her male team. For a conservative society like China, it’s a revolutionary step and an impressive depiction of breaking stereotypes.

Overall Opinion

This Chinese drama is an interesting take on westernized criminal drama tropes. Despite of the low production cost, it was applauded by many and hence it is a recommended drama to watch.
