Drama Digest

Running from the sharp claws of the debtors, Yu Xiao Yu finds herself bound by a mysterious contract as her only way to escape. The said contract gets her involved with a strange family, which sets the path to the beginning of her new unordinary life filled with magic and mermaids.

The Feel-Good Part

This drama is a lighthearted fantasy with a modern-mermaid concept. The good thing is that Swing To The Sky is a short show, so it avoids any draggy scenes. Also, the lingering question of, Ling Kong and Yu Xiao Yu will be able to break the love curse between humans and the merpeople keep the drama intriguing to some extent. OST of the show is another beautiful piece of work.

The Disappointing Factor

This drama felt like a low-budget show with not much variety in locations for the scenes. The story plot, as a whole, is predictable, like served on a platter. There is nothing fresh from this series according to the genre selected. And the behaviors or anger management of the male leads are too dominating and overbearing in line with the plot. The ending is very abrupt and too fast-paced. Several issues and plot holes are left unresolved even until the end, for example, what was the whole character role of the brother being a half-blood prince? what happened to the company after the father came back? little things, questions, left answered like this. It’s not that the concept isn’t interesting, the story was good with a lot of loopholes which also kept on making me wonder why is something is even happening in particular scenes. With no exciting scenes, that’d keep you invested for long or make for a rewatch value. So probably, delivery of the drama was an issue here. The story had a lot more potential.

In-Depth Analysis

The story starts around a diving competition, which both the leads are fond of for their very own reasons. A diving ordeal becomes Ling Kong and Yu Xiao Yu’s shared dream.

The female lead (Xiao Yu), has a pure heart and works hard to make ends meet. When she finds help, an anchor to pull her out of this burdensome life she grabs it with all her might. This anchor turns out to be a suspicious mysterious contract, which Xiao Yu binds to herself.

Through this, she can now meet young people sharing the same dream as hers, diving; she joins the diving team as their prep for the competition begins. On this journey, she meets the infamous typical rich guy, Ling Kong, inherited with the same wealthy character persona similar to general drama or movies.

He is arrogant and with a difficult temperament but a softie at heart, especially when it comes to diving. The water sphere, is his only safe place, a place where he could be free as he is.

Throughout the story, many are enough to bring the participants’ motivation down, but Xiao Yu and Ling Kong stand by each other and for their dream together. Through the ups and downs of life, Ling Kong and Yu Xiao Yu explore and gradually find friendship, trust, and love.

Star Power

A deserved shoutout to Hu Bingqing, who plays the female lead, Yu Xiaoyu gave a graceful performance execution was great despite the lacking storyline. All the actors have given their best shot to each character showcasing each tide as it goes up and when it reaches rock bottom. If it were not for the regular plot or rushed ending, then the cast or rather the actors kept Swing To The Sky afloat.

Overall Opinion

Swing To The Sky may not have a rewatch value, but it’s got good leads and beautiful pieces of music to patch up the evident flaws in the production and written story.
