Drama Digest

The series takes place in Shanghai from the 1920s until the 1940s. It revolves around the Yi family’s three daughters – Yi Zhongling(Qin Lan), Yi Zhongxiu(Wu) and Yi Zhongyu (Zhang Nan). They are all determined to take over their father’s business, but who will? The series, on the other hand, displays the strength of women as they band together to rescue their families and support their nation through difficult times. Even when the sole son of the Yi family(their brother) left the business to become a doctor, the sisters put their differences aside to work together to honour their father’s ambition to revitalise the country after he was assassinated. Their father was a staunch patriot, and his daughters will carry on his legacy.

The Feel Good Part

The best part about this drama is the importance they put on the female characters. It obviously lightens up most of us to know that the world is being saved by female superheroes instead of the same old male counterparts. It is exactly the way you feel when you are elated to see your favourite disbanded band reuniting for a concert. One of our favourite moments was when the production team designed various cheongsam, a kind of traditional Chinese apparel, for the three female characters to highlight their different personalities. For example, Zhongxiu’s clothing includes works of modern art because of the character’s educational background.

The Disappointing Factor

The series has done fairly in all aspects and has added all elements of a drama. It has also portrayed all characters rightfully, giving no disappointing factor. The only aspect there could be more work or improvement on would be the proper backstory of each character. Their introductions felt a bit too abrupt and incomplete.

In-Depth Analysis

Mostly it would feel like women empowerment is the central theme of this drama series. No. It actually centres around the theme of family love and culture. The Chinese title of the drama is ‘Chuanjia’ which literally means passing down through the family. This also refers to passing on love. This love includes love between relatives of a family and love of the motherland because we’re all one big family. All the leading characters show character development which is amazingly portrayed and conveyed across the screen to the viewers. There is this lingering sense of hope and strength when the characters are met with hurdles and they are on the verge of losing their calm but gradually they get back up and fight their way through the hurdles.

Star Power

The actors are amazing ones, indeed. All emotions and the passion they show imply a whole lot of expereince and dedication to acting. Sometimes, it is very hard to convey the exact feeling across a two dimensional screen but all actors of this series have done an excellent job at it.

Overall Opinion

The series has done fairly witht he execution and the theme portrayal. The themes have been subtly portrayed with a sense of realism. Be prepared for small surprises but other than that, all is too good and top-notch.
