Anime Digest

The fourth and final season of the anime adaptation of the popular manga series “Nanatsu no Taizai” is finally complete. “Nanatsu no Taizai Funnu no Shinpan,” is the continuation of the story from “The Seven Deadly Sins Wrath of the Gods.” The story so far has been that the Kingdom of Liones faced a new challenge. For this reason, the Seven Deadly Sins had split up to fight the army in a battle spanning Britannia. Having all their members separated, the Sins fight formidable opponents to rescue Princess Elizabeth and fight the evil they face. Along the way, they learn the truth of what happened in the Holy War, 3000 years ago. In this season, the Seven Sins race against time to lift Elizabeth’s curse before it kills her. Meliodas and Ban travel to the Demon Realm to confront Meliodas’ father, the Demon King, to break the curse. Meanwhile, Merlin, Escanor, and Archangel Ludociel prepare to assassinate Meliodas’ brother Zeldris. Estarossa, Meliodas’ other brother, has kidnapped Elizabeth, and it is up to King, Diane, Gowther, and Hawk to save her. What will happen as Meliodas and his friends face their greatest enemy so far?

The Feel-Good Part

Firstly, this season is a huge improvement from the 3rd season. The animation has improved and the art style finally became consistent. The OSTs of this season were also top-notch. We finally get some closure in terms of all the questions left hanging in the air since the first season. Yet, this is all there is to give any credit for in this season.

The Disappointing Factor

The biggest issue with the last two seasons of “The Seven Deadly Sins” including this one, were the badly scripted episodes. The story seems to be all over the place. Sub-plots that shouldn’t be given that much importance get the most screen time. Due to the last-minute introduction of new information, the viewers end up with more unanswered questions. For an anime with multiple characters, the characters need to explore themselves. This is made impossible because of the way the script is written. The animation, although a major improvement from the previous season, is still not at the same level as the 1st and 2nd seasons. Due to this problem even the action sequences, which are the main attractions of a shounen anime, are a far cry from anything impressive.

In-Depth Analysis

Usually, you would expect that the final season of a show would be the crowning glory of the entire series. Yet, “Nanatsu no Taizai Funnu no Shinpan” completely fails at achieving that. This season is a mediocre representation of the anime at best. The only reason most viewers end up watching this season is simply out of loyalty to the series. The anime should have been about these 7 individuals coming together, out of their unusual circumstances, but somehow the story sidetracked somewhere in the middle. The relationships between the characters get complicated but the anime fails to address the correct issues to unravel these complications. The original manga is an amazing work of fiction but the anime fails to reflect that awesomeness in the animated adaptation.

Star Power

In this season we get to know more about Meliodas’ two brothers – Zeldris and Estarossa. But, his father the Demon King does not get much of a backstory. We see all the other characters resolve their past and move on. We also see how each character’s romantic interests finally play out.

Overall Opinion

The final season of “Nanatsu no Taizai” is nowhere as impressive as people anticipated it to be. Yet, to see the entire series through and give the original manga the respect, it deserves we would suggest you at least give it a try.
